Nymphomaniac actress Stacy Martin said the worst thing about the film was having to interact with her co-stars while naked.
Lars von Trier’s 2013 erotic flick famously featured unstimulated sex and was filmed in two parts, premiering at Cannes Film Festival more than a decade ago starring Shia LaBeouf as Jerôme and Stacy as Joe, the younger version of Charlotte Gainsbourg’s character in Volume II.
Everyone from Uma Thurman to Willem Dafoe to Mia Goth also popped up in the racy rompfest. But for Stacy, who was a relatively unknown actress at the time, it proved difficult to get over her nerves in the build-up to the racy sex scenes. Any actual intercourse involved porn actors as body doubles – but up until that point, it was all down to the A-listers to set the scene.

Stacy explained to The Independent: “What scared me wasn’t the nakedness but it was interacting naked. Shia was very professional but we didn’t actually do anything sexual. That was left to the porn doubles. t’s a totally different industry. The porn stars finish the job off for you. I never thought I’d meet my porn double.”
She went on to add: “We were clear this film wasn’t about nakedness, but that it was part of the story. So I was comfortable with it. Lars wanted to celebrate the female desire and show we have flaws, we are human beings and not perfect.”
For Gainsbourg, however, things proved more stressful. She made it clear to von Trier that she had “limits” for Volume II of the flick, telling Observer Magazine: “I haven’t read the script. I sort of had to commit to doing the film without reading it.
“I know he wants to use porn actors as doubles, like we did in Antichrist, so they would do those shots but then we’d do the rest. I don’t know up to what point but I know I have limits. I had limits on Antichrist – I remember, he asked me to jerk off the porn actor and that’s when I said I couldn’t. So we will see what my limit is for the next one,” she said at the time.
Von Trier is well known for including real sex in his films, and 2009 horror Antichrist was no different. But in that movie, Willem Dafoe wasn’t allowed to strip off because he was simply “too well endowed”.

Body doubles instead had to be used, as the director worried viewers would be “distracted” by Willem’s large package. Dafoe explained: “Lars used a porn actor for those scenes. It was a good decision because, if it was me, then that’s all that people would talk about. Obviously Lars wants the characters to have genitals but it would become a distraction: ‘Oh, they really had sex!’ If he had asked me to do it, I don’t know what I would have said.”
