Meghan Markle set for BBC debut as hit TV show prepares to air for UK viewers

The Duchess of Sussex is set to appear on the BBC for the first time – but not as we know her.

Meghan Markle has been living outside of the UK for years, following her decision to step back from senior royal duties, alongside her husband Prince Harry. But despite their controversial reputation, the couple have gone on to share a number of stories about their time together across various platforms including documentaries and podcasts.

Now, Meghan is set to make a return to the UK – but not in the typical way, as the BBC confirmed it would start airing the show that made Markle famous. The broadcaster confirmed it will make the legal series Suits available to stream on the BBC iPlayer.

The channel has bought the rights to air all nine series of the show, which catapulted Meghan to stardom before she met her Prince. In the show, Meghan plays the role of Rachel Zane, but after a lengthy stint on the show, Meghan decided to retire her acting career upon marrying Prince Harry.

As a result, the decision means that this will be the first time that Suits will be available to stream on the BBC. It will not, however, be alone, as the channel was also able to acquire the rights to broadcast two other series from the States – including St. Denis Medical and The Best Man: The Final Chapters.

Speaking about landing the iconic legal series, the BBC’s Head of Programme Acquisition, Sue Deeks, said: “This is a really exciting and enjoyable trio of star-studded series: the hotly-anticipated comedy, St. Denis Medical, the sassy, romantic comedy-drama, The Best Man: The Final Chapters, and the smart and stylish legal drama, Suits. We couldn’t be more delighted to bring them all to BBC viewers.”

Suits follows a legal firm as they try to navigate the world of law and representation. The show features legendary actor Patrick J. Adams, who plays university dropout Mike Ross – who uses photographic memory to work with good pal Harvey Spector, played by Gabriel Macht – with the pair going on to be a powerful courtroom team.

It comes following news on Tuesday (March 19) that the slick show will be landing itself a spin-off series. No details have yet been released on whether the cast from the original run of the programme will make a return.

Meghan herself has been eyeing up a return to her acting career after she was offered a “dream role” in the spin-off series. Markle has neither confirmed nor denied speculation, but the new series is set to begin filming at the end of the month in the Canadian city of Vancouver.
