GMB’s Richard Madeley takes brutal swipe at Susanna Reid in failed pay gap joke

Good Morning Britain star Richard Madeley has landed himself in hot water following an awkward on-air joke.

Madeley, 67, was hosting the ITV show with Susanna Reid on Monday (March 25). He was also joined by regular co-host Ranvir Singh, who provided the news in brief as the pair rain through some of the biggest headlines of the day.

At the end of the main news, Susanna, 53, and Richard gave viewers a taste of what was coming up on the programme. This included a clip of Oscar-winner Olivia Colman joking that if she was a boy named Oliver Colman, she would be earning a lot more money.

This formed part of a discussion that the hosts were having about the gender pay gap, in which women earn susbtantially less than men for doing the same job. There have been debates about the topic in the film industry, which prompted the chat on the ITV programme.

Colman also added that she found it nonsensical that those who do much of the heavy lifting in a film or a TV programme should be paid more due to their appearance on the project. However, as Susanna explained the context behind Olivia’s comments to viewers watching the show at home, Richard saw the opportunity to make a sly quip to show his frustration with the system.

“Should actors that have more pulling power be paid more?” Susanna asked. “And if that’s the case, there are probably many women who should be paid more than their male counterparts.”

After Reid finished her sentence, Madeley quipped: “Yes, and it’s not just a Hollywood problem, it happens here too.” This left his female co-stars in shock as they tried to comprehend his remarks, whilst Madeley scrambled to clarify his point that he did not mean the GMB team itself.

“No, I don’t mean in ‘HERE’ here,” Richard said. “I mean in a wider sense of the UK!”

Ranvir and Susanna, clearly understanding of Richard’s faux pas, decided to hammer down on his slip-up. Reid beamed with a smile as she joked: “Oh, I’m interested now!”

Madeley then tried to deflect the conversation away from him, adding that he had “never seen” Susanna’s payslip during his time presenting the show. Susanna, however, was quick to make a quick retort, adding: “I’ve never seen yours!”

With producers telling the pair to cut to the local news and traffic, the pair sniggered their way to the end of the part. However, Richard managed to sneak in one more comment that left Ranvir and Susanna in fits of laughter.

As the cameras pulled away from their desk, he quipped: “But now we’re going to get the news, traffic and weather – whatever you’re earning!” This left his on-air co-stars visibly laughing as producers rushed to end the transmission as soon as possible.

Good Morning Britain airs every weekday at 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
