James Martin wasn’t having any of it when a guest asked him a question about an air fryer.
The TV chef, 51, jokingly stormed off the set of the ITV cooking show on Saturday (March 23) after Merlin Griffiths from Channel 4’s First Dates asked him about deep fried bread. The famous cook said: “See you later,” and went to leave Romy Gill’s cooking segment.
Chef Romy was showing how to make Aloo Bread Pakora with Mint Chutney and Chaat Masala, a tasty Punjabi street food recipe when Merlin, 49, wondered if the snack could be made in an air fryer instead of deep frying.

Merlin, who was watching the cooking, said: “It’s got to be deep fried… it’s interesting because people would traditionally keep a pot of fat on the stove for doing the odd bit of deep frying.”
“Could this go in an air fryer? ” he asked. James acted like he was going to be sick and then joked: “I’m off! See you later.”
Romy wasn’t happy about the air fryer question either. She rolled her eyes and told Merlin, “Please don’t ask me about air frying – no, no! Absolutely not! “, reports the Express.
But James returned shortly after his fake walk-off, giving Romy a pat on the back and having a laugh with the production team. James has been very clear before that he doesn’t like air fryers at all. He even said once that they “should be banned”.
Celebrity chef James Martin has slammed a popular kitchen gadget and refuses to use it. Speaking at the BBC Good Food Show Winter, he declared: “I don’t use an air fryer. In my opinion they should be banned.”
While rustling up his crispy fried chicken, he sharply added: “I don’t even want to speak to anyone that has an air fryer.” The chef said: “You can’t do this in a bl***y air fryer. It’s got to be deep fried to get the colour, texture and flavour”.
Away from his cooking adventures, James has split from his long-term girlfriend Louise Davies. As reported by Mail Online, a spokesperson confirmed their break up happened in December 2023 but both remain good friends.
