Mariah Carey, ‘80s-inspired bangers and a cheesy storyline – what could be wrong with the movie, Glitter?
Starring the chart-topping pop star, the musical rom-com was released in 2001 – and it’s fair to say it ruffled plenty of feathers. The film was dubbed the “worst film ever made” by critics and even Mariah scooped an award for Worst Actress for her role as a budding singer.
Although I’m a big Mariah fan myself (fave album *has to be* Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel) up until a few hours ago I never actually watched Glitter. (In my defense, I have watched 2009’s Precious that she stars in – which is easily one of my favourite films).

But something about a film that so many people sl***ed off didn’t exactly make me want to spend time watching it… until now. So, with Mimi celebrating her birthday, I thought why not sit down and watch it?
Within seconds of pressing play on Glitter though, I’m already feeling a tad troubled. Not because of the grainy vintage quality, but because of its runtime: 144 minutes. Coming in at almost two and a half hours, it takes longer to watch Glitter than it does to watch a bloody Harry Potter movie!
Glitter is basically about a wannabe singer called Billie (Mariah) who ends up coming across a DJ who helps her with her career to become an international superstar. And spoiler alert – they fall in love.
Kinda feels similar to the 2018 movie A Star is Born, right? Starring Lady GaGa? Only the GaGa movie received rave reviews and cemented the pop star as a *serious* actor – whereas Mariah’s flick ended up more with a yellow sticker and in the reduced aisle in Tesco…
Around an hour into the movie and okay – it’s cringe-fest galore. There are a ton of musical numbers not to mention sexist remarks. But would you really expect anything less from a rom-com released in the 2000s?
As for Mariah, there’s no criticism aimed at her – more for the predictable rinse-and-repeat storyline. (No amount of whistle tones can save the plot, sorry Mariah).
Even one of the movie’s stars wasn’t too keen on the film and “nearly cried” when he saw it. Max Beesley plays the DJ Dice that Mariah’s character falls in love with.
And speaking to the Guardian he said: “That [the film] was a disaster. But you know, when we made it, it was OK and there was some heavy-duty drama – really, heavy drama – and Mariah really showed her acting boots. They just cut all that out and I nearly cried when I saw it.”
Fast forward to the end, and obviously Mariah has some big ballad number and gets her happy ending. And of course, there is a ton of glitter…
My overall thoughts? The movie is not good but it’s not bad either. But much like Katie Price’s musical career, reports of its awfulness have been sooo exaggerated. (Justice for The Pricey’s tune I Got You).
After all, how can Glitter be the “worst film ever made” when the Lord Of The Rings franchise exists, eh?
