BBC Radio legend admits he ‘made up’ claims he had slept with 500 women

A BBC Radio icon has spilled the beans about his wild past and confessed his highly publicised sexual escapades were a lie.

Tony Blackburn, 81, previously said he had been with more than 250 ladies before he got hitched. He then later said that the number was more like 500 in 2012.

But now, the famous radio star has owned up to making it all up. Tony even admitted to just throwing out a big number when he was writing his life story for his memoir.

While developing his written story, his ghostwriter, Cheryl Garnsey, told him that they needed an angle to captivate readers for his 1985 book Living Legend: Tony Blackburn Story. Tony told Radio Times: “She [the writer] said she hadn’t got enough sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.”

However, the radio icon didn’t even have a look at his own book before it hit the shelves and was left stunned by the fib he told.

Tony added: “Well, I don’t do drugs and I made up this number because I was fed up being asked about my personal life, not my best moment, to be honest.

“I didn’t read my own autobiography. It was stupid.”

Tony got married to his second wife Debbie Thompson seven years after his book came out. The pair share one daughter together named Victoria. Tony is also a grandad to two boys and has a son called Simon, who’s 50, from his first marriage to Tessa Wyatt.

Tony tied the knot with Tessa in 1972. However, they called time on their relationship five years later in 1977.

Last month, Tony shared that he’s hanging up his headphones on his famous show after an incredible 15 years. The TV star’s last show aired last week on March 24.

Tony, who is also the first-ever I’m A Celeb winner, hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a return one day. But at the moment he wants to focus on other projects.

In his announcement on X, formerly known as Twitter, Tony shared what his plans are. He said: “At some stage, I might come back to BBC Local radio but, for now, I’m going to focus on my @BBCRadio2 shows Sounds Of The Sixties and the Golden Hour and my theatre tour which comes back in March.”
