EastEnders star admits he joined ‘irritating’ reality show because he was ‘skint’

EastEnders’ Ben Mitchell star wasn’t happy with his previous reality stint.

Harry Reid, who played Ben from 2014 to 2018, may be thrilled being back on the stage and focusing his career in theatre, but he’s done some TV work he’s not too proud of.

After he left the beloved BBC One soap, he soon signed up to Celebrity Coach Trip and did a stint on the show in 2019, but he’s not in a rush to go back. Speaking on the Soap From The Box podcast, Harry admitted he found the experience “irritating”.

Speaking of his time on the show, he said: “It was the first year they’d done a solo traveller, but I was paired up with another solo traveller so all it meant was I didn’t know who I was going with.

“They paired me with James Hill from The Apprentice, he’s a lovely geezer actually.” But while Harry got on with his co-star, the filming process wasn’t’ quite up his street.

He said: “[Reality TV is] hard work but I’m not gonna be here to s**g of reality TV but they’re hard work because they’re irritating. Because you’re coming down for breakfast and someone’s shoving a camera in your face.

“And the whole voting thing ruins you. I couldn’t stand it, it was horrible, intense, I hated it. Look I was skint at the end of the day, that’s why I was there. I’ve got no problem admitting that.”

Harry had been used to his regular earnings on EastEnders, but in 2018 his character Ben headed for a new live in France, and when he returned the following year, Max Bowden was in the role.

Harry admitted on the podcast that he was disappointed with how it played out as he was replaced on the soap, but confessed he’s more thrilled with his work now.

He has since been working on stage at the theatre and admitted on the podcast that he loves the support from a live audience.

Just last year he took part in Beauty and The Beast with his former co-star Shona McGarty, who plays Whitney Dean on the soap. She said at the time that it had been the “best” working with him again after six years.
