Corrie star Helen Flanagan suffered ‘psychotic episode’ due to ADHD medication

Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan has candidly confessed she had an episode of psychosis after a “bad reaction” to her medication.

Flanagan, 33, who is best known for playing Rosie Webster on the ITV soap recently bore all to her fans after taking some time away from social media. In her first post on Instagram since January, the actress admitted she “had a few months off social,” but exclaimed she was “back now”.

In the post, Helen bravely opened up on how she had been struggling with her mental health in recent months. She added things had begun since she had broken up with her long-term partner Scott Sinclair in October 2022.

Despite the pair continuing to be good parents to their kids Matilda, Delilah and Charlie, Helen admitted she was in a bad place last Christmas. Flanagan said she had tried a number of different things to try and pull her out of her depressive emotions, but nothing was working.

“So basically I really struggled mental health wise December/January,” she wrote. “I felt really not great in my head over Christmas and I didn’t really feel that much different when I took the kids away for new year.”

She also said: “I had a lot of difficult things going on things I just can’t talk about on Instagram.” Whilst there were things she was looking forward to, such as an upcoming theatre tour, things were not getting better and, as a result, she started taking medication to help her “feel better”.

Helen also said that she began taking the medication as a way to “cope better with being a working single mum of three, and I was emotionally struggling with the break up from the father of my kids”. The medication she took was to be used for those living with attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), and at first the drugs were working.

However, things soon took a turn for the worse for Helen, as she explained that she began to feel paranoid, which then went into a full-blown episode of psychosis. “I had a really bad reaction though to the medication (an ADHD medication) and it sent me into a psychosis for a few days which I didn’t know I was in,” she explained.

“I just love my kids so much,” Helen continued. “This bad reaction though was a few days before rehearsals were starting and sadly I just wasn’t mentally well enough to do it.

Flanagan admitted she was “heartbroken” at having to pull out of the theatre run, but insisted she “needed to stay at home and feel better for me and my kids, with the help of my amazing parents.”

Now, she gave fans an update on how she was mentally, revealing she was in a “really good, happy place”. She also confessed to seeking therapy, which has been “amazing” for her, adding that by working on herself, she feels “lighter” thanks to the support she is getting.

The Corrie star was set to take part in the UK tour of Cluedo 2. Due to be playing the role of Miss Scarlett, she was eventually replaced by fellow ex-Corrie actress and Strictly winner Ellie Leach.
