Before the credits rolled during Friday’s (March 29) episode of the Channel 4 show, a message appeared on screen reading “In Loving Memory George Gilbey 1984-2024.” The message didn’t go unnoticed by fans, with one writing on social media: “Nice tribute to George at the end of the episode tonight. So sad 40 is no age. RIP George #Gogglebox.” Another added: “Nice tribute to George at the end #Gogglebox.”
George’s final words were shared by a co-worker on Friday, who said the star was on the roof of an Essex warehouse when the fatal incident happened. His pal said: “George had not been in a good way and maybe should not have been working at all. He was up on the roof and the others were shouting at him to get down and to be careful.”
Chatting to The Sun, the friend added: “He was shouting back that he was alright, even though he was not very steady on his feet. Then, he apparently came through a skylight so fell from the outside of the roof about 80ft on to concrete inside. Poor George did not stand a chance and it is a terrible way to go.”
George’s tragic death happened at the EGL Homecare place in Shoebury, Essex. A man in his 40s has since been arrested for suspected manslaughter in relation to the incident. The police are continuing to investigate the tragic event along with health and safety officials, reports the Mirror.
George, who had a little girl named Amelie with Gemma Conway in 2016, was well known for watching telly on Gogglebox with his mum and stepdad. He started on the Channel 4 show in its second series in 2013.
The family from Essex left the show in 2014, and then George went into the Celebrity Big Brother house that year and stayed until the very end. In 2016, George returned to Gogglebox with Linda and Pete.
Gogglebox airs Fridays on Channel 4 at 9pm
