Robbie Coltrane was “battling constant pain” every day in the run-up to his death at the age of 72.
Coltrane, who was known for his numerous acting credits, tragically passed away on October 14, 2022, after a long illness. Best known for his role as Hagrid, the gamekeeper in the film adaptions of the Harry Potter novels, Robbie passed away surrounded by his loved ones at a hospital in Larbert, in central Scotland.
But before he succumbed to his illnesses, Robbie was said to be living with “constant pain”, being forced out of work due to his need to have his knee replaced, according to the Glasgow Times at the time. Coltrane, who also appeared in other dramas including Channel 4 hit National Treasure, suffered from osteoarthritis, which ate away at his joints, leaving him unable to walk for long.

As well as this, the disease created immense pain for the actor as his joints began to seize up, rendering him almost immobile. Towards the end of his life, the condition left him bound to a wheelchair, requiring more and more care from his loved ones.
Osteoarthritis is believed by medical professionals to be one of the top causes of disability worldwide, ranking fourth overall according to research. The disease is degenerative to joints, eventually corroding the lubrication that keeps joints loose and making it more and more painful to move.
Doctors believe the condition develops when cartilage and bones are eventually broken down over time, which in turn causes the disease. Looking back on the later stages of his career, Robbie himself lamented at the constant feeling of pain he was being put through.
“I was fighting pain 24 hours a day when I was in National Treasure and Great Expectations,” Robbie explained at the time. “I had no cartilage in my knee. It was bone on bone.”
A source close to the actor revealed to the Glasgow Times that he was rendered immobile and required him to need assistance until further notice. The insider added that he was looking at having medical treatment for the disease in America before he passed away.
“It’s hugely frustrating for him but he’s really hoping to be back on his feet after getting the operation,” the source added. However, despite their positive mental attitude, Robbie eventually lost his battle with his health and passed away from multiple organ failure, which had been complicated by sepsis and infections.
Upon his death, thousands of devastated friends, family members, fans and colleagues, flooded Robbie’s loved ones with messages of support and condolences. The actor, who also starred in the likes of James Bond films GoldenEye and The World is Not Enough, triggered an outpouring of grief from colleagues across the world of entertainment.
Author of the Harry Potter books, JK Rowling, led tributes to the actor, describing him as an “incredible” person. She added: “I’ll never know anyone remotely like Robbie again.”
