Kate Garraway has shared a message of “hope” and “new beginnings” as she comes to terms with the death of her husband.
Former political advisor Derek Draper sadly passed away in January aged 56, having suffered with serious health complications ever since contracting Covid-19 in 2020. His tragic passing has been in the news again in the past week following the release of Kate’s documentary, Derek’s Story, which charted the latter stages of her his life.
Kate revealed it was Derek’s wish to tell his story and highlight the incredible work of the paid and unpaid healthcare staff in the UK. Now to mark Easter, 56-year old Kate has taken has taken to her Instagram account to thank those who are working on Easter Sunday as she spends time with her kids – albeit whilst working too.

In a message to her 1.2 million followers, the Good Morning Britain presenter penned: “Happy Easter everyone! Usually we have a mega family egg hunt at my Aunty Lynne’s but this year I am actually working – although in a spectacular location & have brought the kids with me so hard to call it work.”
Kate continued: “Very grateful to be able to have this time and sending love to all who are working today in less glamorous locations – keeping the wheels turning for the rest of us. Hope you find some joy & new hope today & everyday xxx #hope. #newbeginnings. #love.”
Accompanying her post were snaps of a cute Easter egg tree and a Sunday carvery. One fan wrote in response: “You all deserve it Kate after everything you’ve been through! Give those children a big hug!” Another commented: “Happy Easter Kate may I just mention Wow that looks absolutely beautiful that must have taken a lot of time gorgeous just like yourself.”
A third added: “You always so considerate of everyone else. Have a lovely Easter with your kids xxx.” And a fourth said: “Happy Easter Kate to you and your family look after yourself.”
Speaking in her documentary in a clip recorded in February, Kate revealed she didn’t feel any sense of relief when Derek passed away. “We’ve got the Lego which never was finished,” she said. “Actually this is the book he was reading, very slowly, at the very end and this is as far as he got. I said to him, trust you to be reading A Little Life, because if anybody had a big life it was Derek and it’s left a big hole.
“A lot of people, as a way of comforting me I think, say it must be a relief in a way that he’s out of pain. And for you, that your day isn’t consumed with caring for him, but there isn’t a relief.”
She added: “I think if I have any regrets, it’s every single minute that I didn’t spend holding his hand because I had to go and write an email, I had to go and make a phone call, having to fight the system that should be there to catch you when you’re fall, but feels when you’re going through it like it’s there to catch you out. And that’s what now I want to be Derek’s legacy to fight on for that change.”
