Facebook ‘allowed Netflix access to users’ private messages’, lawsuit claims

Meta allegedly let Netflix access Facebook users’ private messages for “nearly a decade”, a lawsuit has claimed.

According to reports, the move was allowed to help the streaming platform tailor content for its viewers. It is also reported that a class-action lawsuit has been filed by US citizens Maximillian Klein and Sarah Grabert, who allege the platforms “enjoyed a special relationship” as Facebook offered Netflix “bespoke access” to users’ data.

According to MailOnline, court documents which were unsealed on March 23, that had been filed in April 2023 as part of an anti-trust lawsuit against Meta, appeared to show the close relationship between Netflix and Facebook’s parent company.

Zuckerberg launched Facebook back in 2004

It has been claimed that “custom partnerships and integrations that helped supercharge Facebook’s ad targeting and ranking models” were agreed from “at least 2011”. It has been claimed that this is thanks to the relationship between Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Netflix’s Reed Hastings.

Lawyers have claimed that Hastings joined Facebook’s board of directors and “within a month” Facebook and Netflix signed an Inbox Application Programming Interface. This allegedly allowed Netflix “programmatic access to Facebook’s user’s private message inboxes”.

Netflix is one of the biggest streaming services in the world today

According to claims, the companies agreed the Netflix would give a report to Facebook every two weeks to showcase how users interacted with the platform. This isn’t the first time Meta has landed in legal hot water.

Back in 2022, Ireland fined Meta $284million after a data leak exposed information about more than half a billion users, including full names, phone numbers and locations. Also in 2022, Meta agreed to pay $725m to settle a security breach involving Cambridge Analytica.

It has been alleged Facebook and Netflix had an agreement

Facebook is one of the biggest social media platforms in the world. It was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with four of his Harvard College friends. It was originally limited to students of the university, but has since expanded worldwide.

Netflix is a subscription video streaming service launched back in 2007. The company originally offered DVDs by mail, but the company turned to online streaming back in the noughties and is one of the most visited websites in the entire world.
