Naga Munchetty spent ‘whole life smiling through pain’ as she issues health update

Naga Munchetty says she’s felt compelled to hide the “constant, nagging pain” she feels because of her health condition.

The 49-year-old BBC Breakfast star was diagnosed with adenomyosis in 2022, a condition that occurs when the lining of the uterus grows deep into the muscle of the womb. It can cause pain in your pelvic area, heavy bleeding during your period and other symptoms.

Revealing she felt she had to smile through the pain, Naga told Metro: “I have done all my life: through my GCSEs, through my A-Levels, through my degree, and every job I had. No one wants to be seen as weak. I don’t think that now.”

However, the presenter now feels her condition is much more manageable now that she’s been diagnosed and been getting the right treatment. She explained that she isn’t worried her reputation at work will be affected by it.

She went on: “It’s much more manageable and because I’ve spoken so publicly about it if I really am struggling, I can say “I’m struggling”, and I know the people I need to say that to will recognise that I only say it when I really am.

“I don’t worry about being seen as someone who is using it as an excuse to not work.”

Naga, who gets up at 3:45am to host BBC Breakfast three days a week, struggled to sleep due to her symptoms. She told MPs at a Women and Equalities Committee: “Whenever I went to the doctor I was told it was normal, and I have quite a high profile job.

“I wouldn’t sleep because I would have to set an alarm say for two in the morning, every four hours, and I would be lying on a towel and I’d have a heavy sanitary towel and a super plus tampon in and I’d set an alarm to change.”

She said she’s managed to cut down her morning routine to just 16 minutes, ensuring she’s in the office for around 4.50am. She then has her morning conference, gets her make-up done, and a rehearsal before going on air at 6am.

The broadcaster also insists she loves her job despite not enjoying the 3.45am alarm. She also explained she doesn’t need lots of sleep and usually nods off at 11.30pm.
