Jake Gyllenhaal likes to film intimate scenes totally nude and thinks ‘sex is essential’

Jake Gyllenhaal prefers to film his sex scenes in the nude.

He said: “I’ve never had sex with boxers on and it’s an odd thing to watch an actor… not to say I haven’t tried, but I don’t recommend it.” He stripped off with Anne Hathaway to communicate that their Love and Other Drugs characters were totally comfortable around each other.

Gyllenhaal added: “I think we all decided that if we were going to tell a love story, one of the essential elements of a love story is sex and it should be, and if we were going to be as open and intimate in the love story as we could be we’d have to do the same thing in the sex.”

Gyllenhaal and Hathaway starred in the 2010 romcom

He continued: “And when you see two people in a movie like that, particularly as an actor and they’re portraying two people in love, it’s like: How do you really, truly, even unconsciously believe that these two people are in love if they don’t want to be naked around each other, you know?”

Jake admitted that the move was “really important to them” because they wanted to “get somewhere in the audience’s unconscious” and plant “the idea that these two characters were actually in love”. Gyllenhaal and Hathaway were aware that they didn’t want their scenes to look like “just actors telling a love story”.

The Hollywood pair starred alongside each other in the 2010 comedy film, which also included a number of other famous faces like Hank Azaria, Josh Gad and Gabriel Macht. The story follows Jake’s character Jamie who strikes up a relationship with a young woman, but she eventually begins to suffer from Parkinson’s disease.

The stars became tangled in an on-screen relationship

Jamie Randall is painted to be a womaniser and starts working at a pharmaceuticals company, where he meets Anne’s character Maggie Murdock. The film earned them many nominations, including the Golden Globe for Best Actor and Best Actress.

Hathaway won the Satellite Award for Best Actress for her performance in the rom-com, which was a smash hit when it was released almost 15 years ago.
