GMB’s Kate Garraway says she’ll ‘pipe down’ after making cheeky dig at co-star

Kate Garraway has been told to “pipe down” after making a little jibe to one of her Good Morning Britain co-stars.

Garraway, 56, returned to our screens once again on Monday (April 8) to present the ITV show, alongside Ed Balls. During the show, the hosting pair ran through the main stories of the day, including some more good news stories.

One of the stories covered was that of Russ Cook, otherwise known as the so-called “Hardest Geezer”. Cook has been on a mission to race the entire length of Africa for charity, facing sweltering temperatures and being held at gunpoint at various stages of his journey.

For the last leg of his journey, Russ was joined by a number of well-wishers and fellow marathon enthusiasts, as he ran the final 42 kilometres to the finish line at the northernmost point in Africa. As well as fellow runners, several journalists ran alongside him, asking him questions along the way.

Among the journalists was GMB reporter Jonathan Swain, who ran with Cook for a number of kilometres before racing ahead to catch him reach his finishing point. He also stayed close to the hotel to have an exclusive interview with the runner, who has already raised £700k in funds.

Reporting live on the beach next to Cook’s hotel, Jonathan filled viewers in on the mammoth achievement. However, as the footage showed Swain running with Russ for a portion of time, Kate took it upon herself to make a cheeky dig at the reporter.

Joking with co-host Ed back in the studios in London, Kate admitted that they were hoping Russ could be up in time for the interview, as he said he wanted to enjoy a well-deserved lie-in. However, she added: “Let’s hope he’s not too hungover when we chat to him, because he might be a little bit hard – a bit cross about it.”

The live link then went back to Tunisia, as Jonathan once again came into view baking in the North African sun. Garraway then saw the perfect opportunity to make a sly jibe at the reporter.

“There’s Jonathan there, looking very relaxed as he ran all of what – 2.5 feet, was it?” Kate said, before erupted into a fit of cheeky laughter. Swain, who was delayed by a couple of seconds, was less than impressed with the swipe and hit back, letting the presenting duo know what really happened.

“Uh, actually 5k! 5k I did yesterday, thank you very much!” he fumed. “In this heat as well, even Russ was quite impressed with it.”

Clearly rather embarrassed at her comment, Kate was quick to back down, raising her hand to her head. She quipped: “I’ll salute you, I’ll salute you and then I will pipe down.”

Good Morning Britain airs every weekday at 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
