In the new film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, Zendaya plays tennis coach Tashi Duncan who used to be a player herself. The character stumbles into a love triangle with two other athletes, who are played by Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist.

Faist also addressed their bonding time away from set and added: “We were able to spend time together during rehearsals and beyond, especially with Josh. We were able to get to know each other as people before we could get into the film. We created a real friendship that created the basis of the film.”

The premise of the film has been released and explains that Tashi is a “former tennis prodigy turned coach” who is married to a current champion experiencing a losing streak. “Her strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.”

The film was originally announced back in February 2022 and filming began soon after in May that same year. Challengers is set to be released in cinemas on 26 April.

According to reports, Zendaya spent three months with a tennis coach and filming took place in Boston, Massachusetts. It was also reported that Guadagnino visited the former Disney Channel actress on the set of Dune: Part Two while she was in the middle of filming, so that she could provide dubs for the post production process.

Zendaya has also jokingly referred to the film as “Codependency: The Movie” while co-star Josh O’Connor referenced the 2007 film Superbad.
