Heartwarming reason Saturday Night Takeaway is coming to an end after two decades

The final episode of Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway will air this weekend.

After becoming one of the most popular shows on British television, the ITV show is rapidly heading towards the end, with the Geordie duo excited for the next stage of their lives.

The programme has become an integral part of the duo’s careers, with the long-time co-hosts, utilising their electric chemistry to amuse the nation. However, all good things have to come to an end, to make way for something new, especially in the case of Ant, who is thrilled to be welcoming a child into the world.

The source continued: “When they found out last year, they were absolutely delighted, but obviously kept the news quiet for as long as possible. “He’s already a wonderful, doting father to Anne-Marie’s kids, and together, they’re going to be brilliant parents to this latest addition to the family. To be having a child two years short of his 50th birthday, with the love of his life, is the stuff of dreams for Ant.”

Speaking in an interview with The Independent, Dec revealed that after many a fond memory, he’s ready to finish at the top, leaving fans with memories they can cherish for a lifetime. “Twenty series just feels like a natural point to pause. We don’t want to say we’ll never do it again. But we’ve both got families now. Our lives have changed dramatically. We want to step off the hamster wheel, catch our breath and decide what’s next.”

Dec continued: “It will be bittersweet, with lots of tears, but it feels like the right thing.” When the announcement was initially made, ITV boss Kevin Lygo said: “When you think of Saturday night television, you think of Saturday Night Takeaway. Over 20 series, the show has become a cultural phenomenon, and while we eagerly anticipate what Ant & Dec have up their sleeves for the 2024 series, we completely understand their desire to take a pause, take stock, and think about what the next incarnation of the show might look like.”
