Grimes suffered an on-stage breakdown at Coachella as she swore and growled through the “worst set in history”.
The techno star, who was married to Elon Musk, was forced to apologise to her fans during a 50-minute set filled with glitches. Forced to restart songs several times, Grimes also had problems with the speed of her tracks while sitting atop a DJ booth.
The real issues came while she was trying to play Music 4 Machines, which left Grimes swearing and apologising, telling the crowd: “We are actually having a major technical difficulty.” Fans turned to social media at the time to fume over the set, with one writing: “Grimes’ tracks are at double tempo for some reason and she’s tried to explain like six times now she can’t mix them on the fly.”

Another said: “This could be the worst performance in the history of Coachella. #Grimes.” While a third quipped: “Frank Ocean seeing everyone say Grimes had the worst Coachella performance of all time.” Somebody else followed up: “It’s hilarious that maybe the most vocal defender of AI in music is Grimes and her Coachella set is just a total technical breakdown.”
Grimes later took to X – formerly Twitter – to offer a full statement on the set, telling fans: “I want to apologise for the technical issues with the show tonight. I wanted to come back [really] strong and usually I always handle every aspect of my show myself – to save time this was one of the first times I’ve outsourced essential things like rekordbox BPMs and letting someone else organise the tracks on the SD card etc.
“I had a bad feeling beforehand not having run everything thru the CDJs myself and tho I flagged it I wasn’t insistent. The big lesson for me was a mix of: 1 if u want it done right, do it yourself. 2 be a c*** even if ppl feel bad. 3 probably pretend it’s fine and engage [with] the crowd rather than spend a whole show slumped over the desk trying to fix software when ur meant to be entertaining.”
She added: “I will personally organise all the files next week. I will not let such a thing happen again. I’ve spent months on this show, making music and visuals, and admittedly am not in the best mood ATM. But, yeh – next week will be flawless, everything will run thru my hands
“Some good lessons learned. Bless y’all. The cdjs were showing me BPMs like 370 so I couldn’t even mix manually by ear and the front monitors were off so it was literally sonic chaos on my end trying to guess how stuff was sounding for u guys. Plz forgive me! Love, always.”

She said she was “not aware” that she was screaming in frustration in the middle of songs, as she said: “My friends just showed me I constantly scream and squeak into the mic a few days ago which adds another layer of psychological chaos hahahaha but I’ll at least get some verb and dist on there if i need to do that again.”
