Claire Foy says filming sex scenes for BBC show left her feeling ‘exposed and exploited’

Actress Claire Foy previously opened up about her discomfort with filming sex scenes, describing it as the “grimmest thing you can do”.

The 40-year-old, who celebrates her birthday on April 16, appeared in the drama A Very British Scandal but said she felt “exploited”. In the BBC series which aired in 2021, Claire plays Margaret Campbell, the Duchess of Argyll, whose private life was scandalously exposed during her divorce proceedings.

The Duchess, known for her charisma, beauty, and style, was subjected to the public release of explicit photographs after her husband sought a divorce on grounds of adultery. The 1963 court hearing heavily scrutinised the Duchess’s sexual history, with her husband Ian Campbell publicly speculating about the number of men she had slept with and providing explicit photos allegedly showing her doing the deed.

Fast forward nearly six decades later, Foy admitted that she found filming the sex scenes for the onscreen adaptation challenging. Taling on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, she said: “It’s a really hard line because basically, you do feel exploited when you are a woman and you are having to perform fake sex on screen. You can’t help but feel exploited.”

“It’s grim it’s the grimmest thing you can do. You feel exposed. Everyone can make you try to not feel that way but it’s unfortunately the reality.”

The real-life divorce proceedings were scandalous, with accusations of forgery, theft, violence, drug-taking, secret recording and bribery. The Duchess was branded a “highly sexed woman” by the judge, who claimed she was not “satisfied with normal relations and had started to indulge in disgusting sexual activities to gratify a debased sexual appetite”.

However, the British actress, who is also known for her role in the hit Netflix series The Crown, believes that the media’s focus on the duchess’s sexuality at the time was unfair and very cruel. When asked if she felt the Duchess was slut-shamed during the scandal in the 1960s, Claire insisted that it was a phrase that she often hated using.

She said: “I hate the phrase slut-shaming, I absolutely hate it. But I think that women have basically been slut-shamed forever. I think Eve was probably slut-shamed.”

“There is something about it that I just hate, the rephrasing of the ownership of that title, and it being used in a way that justifies it even more. Just the word ‘slut’, I think, probably shouldn’t exist.”
