When a hardman gave national treasure Danny Dyer a “one inch punch” on TV, he’d have never imagined it would go down as one of telly’s most iconic moment.
Mo Teague’s memorable punch, seen in the video above, took place on Danny Dyer’s Hardest Men in 2009 and he claims there was a perfectly good reason behind it.
Mo told the Hurts So Good podcast: “I got a phone call saying ‘We’re making a TV series called Britain’s deadliest men.’ I never saw myself like that at all… I was writing for magazines, but I was writing about violence.”
The producers met up with the ex-Grenadier Guards Mortarman, and seemed at first to be aiming reg programme in quite a serious direction: I think it was meant to be focusing on the my PTSD and how the PTSD was a contribution to my violence.”

But, the burly martial arts instructor continued, the production team soon started taking the show into a more playful direction. The segment was filmed in Weymoth’s The Dorothy Inn, and a few members of the cast and crew may have been availing themselves of the refreshments on offer.
Mo recalled: “The director guy said at lunchtime ‘Dan’s being a d**k. He’s being late’ and that sort of thing. He was drinking.
“[The director] couldn’t just straighten him out a little bit?.’ I said ‘What do you mean?’ And he said ‘Well, you know, read between the lines – can you give him a little dig, just wake him up a little bit.”
It was at that point that Mo gave Danny a gentle tap on the chin, which left the presenter stunned. “You nearly knocked me spark out then, for f***’s sake,” Danny exclaimed. “That shook me. I didn’t expect that at all.”
Mo received a good deal of criticism after the show was aired, but he wasn’t to blame. He continued: “It wasn’t my idea. People say ‘You’re a bully,’ but wasn’t my idea. It was scripted – not as far as Danny was concerned though.
“I touched him – it was the old one-inch punch but apparently his jaw was black the next day. He wrote in his book that he hated me at that moment.”
Later, Danny managed to see the funny side of the incident and they had a few drinks together after the filming was completed. Since that moment, he’s been a lot more sceptical about what he sees on television. He explained: “It was an education for me in terms of what to believe on TV, because you know it’s all manipulation to to get us to believe a story.”
