Britain’s Got Talent viewers were in for a surprise on during the latest episode night as one magician “returned”.
During the latest episode, magician Jack Rhodes, 27, introduced himself to the judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and Bruno Tonioli before dropping a bombshell. Jack, who aspires to take his show to Las Vegas, claimed: “I’m pretty surprised you don’t recognise me.”
Then he shocked everyone when he revealed a huge secret: “I might have been on before… you didn’t see me. Do you remember the invisible magician, The Phantom? That might have been me…”

Viewers will recall that “invisible” act The Phantom auditioned back in 2022 with the whole audition done as a voiceover with a voice disguise. The mind-bending magic act impressed the judges and The Phantom secured a place in the semi-finals but it was comedian Axel Blake who won series 15.
The judges and audience were left speechless over Jack’s bombshell to which a playback of The Phantom appeared on stage to refresh their minds. Jack said: “You didn’t see me at the time because I’m like a gangly ninja, I can move undetected. I’ll show you what I mean using these blank cards.”
Jack then then asked Simon to write down a word on one of the blank cards, asking him to write the first word that comes to mind when he looks at him.
Jack then revealed that Simon had wrote down the word “cucumber”, leaving the audience bemused. Jack then sandwiched the card in Simon’s hands as he wrote the first word that comes to mind looking at Simon, writing the word “minted”.
The magician then put the card with the word “minted” in Bruno’s hands, pointing out they both have two different words. Jack then claimed he was going to move undetected as he remained still, leaving the judges confused.
However, upon turning their cards over, they both realised they had each other’s cards and they had swapped over. Jack then vowed to show the audience and judges exactly what had happened as he gave Simon and Bruno their original cards back.
A second member of his act joined the stage in a scuba diving suit as they provided a comedy sketch, where they playfully swapped the cards around in clear view while Jack remained paused before joking: “See, undetected!”
However, Jack then backtracked saying: “Alright, I’m lying, I’m lying, really, I’m lying, show them!” to which Simon and Bruno’s cards suddenly spelt out “I’m lying”.
Jack added: “I’ve been lying the whole time, at the start of this, I showed you a video claiming The Phantom was me, allegedly, but I posted another video, a prediction called: ‘What Simon will think of…’ uploaded six months ago” to which the clip showed the word “cucumber”.
The judges were left completely stunned over the trick but there was more as the second person of Jack’s act then suddenly appeared on stage and put themselves in a box with no context given as Jack ignored them.
Simon was left baffled, saying: “Is that the end?” adding: “I think you’re really smart and I think to be a great magician, you’ve got to be really smart. You have massive potential and I genuinely mean that. The only thing lacking for me was the ending didn’t feel big enough…”
However, this was all part of Jack’s trick as he then opened the box up, revealing the mystery scuba diving person had disappeared. Taking to Twitter, now X, viewers are convinced they’ve rumbled Jack’s trick.
One person said: “#BGT when he shuffles cards like that there’s an easy opportunity to slip something in”, a different account put: “All this just for a simple slight of hand trick” while another wrote: “Okay a bit of sight of hand… and then a read your mind trick. Nothing new #BGT #BritainsGotTalent.”
Elsewhere, a different account put: “That was 3 basic magic tricks but together… we’ve seen loads of this before #BGT #BritainsGotTalent” while another added: “When he puts the card on top and turns it over, he turns 2 cards over and gives you the other one. It’s in every children’s book of card tricks.”
Britain’s Got Talent continues next Saturday on ITV1 and ITVX
