ITV’s new thriller Red Eye has left viewers sleepless as they brand the gripping series “ridiculous”.
The six-part drama, which stars Fool Me Once actor Richard Armitage as Dr Matthew Nolan, premiered on Sunday night on ITV1 and ITVX, and has already left fans hooked. The story revolves around Matthew, who is accused of murdering a woman in Beijing.
Following the accusation, he is immediately sent back on the last flight of the day after landing in London. DC Hana Li, played by actress Jing Lusi, is tasked with keeping him in check, although at first she clearly wants nothing to do with him beyond her professional duties.

Viewers were eager to see how the story unfolds, with many watching the entire series in one go on ITV’s streaming platform. Heading over to X formerly known as Twitter to share their thoughts on the series, one social media user said: “I didn’t sleep until two o’clock in the morning, but I watched until the most magnificent ending. Intense, exciting and captivating. Thanks to @RCArmitage and all cast and crew of #RedEye for the pleasure. It was quite a flight!”
Other viewers echoed these sentiments and said: “#redeye ridiculous but still got me hooked,” while another chimed: “This #redeye is amazing. Obv I’ve gone straight to itvx to binge watch the whole series. Who needs sleep anyway #itvx.”
And another added: “Richard Armitage who cares if the plot is ridiculous!” The first episode includes a memorable scene where Matthew stands on a high surface in a bustling airport, pleading with the public for help.
The filming took an unexpected turn when people nearby, instead of the typical extras, were wrapped up in the commotion unknowingly, as they were simply getting set for their travels. Not aware that it was part of a TV show’s storyline.
Sharing his thoughts with Metro.co.uk, actor Richard explained that performing the dramatic scene at Stansted airport was a “hair-raising” experience. It also gave him clear memories of people panicking around him as he shouted out his lines.
He said: “Some folks rushed into WHSmith saying: ‘There’s a man being arrested.’ I’d entered a zone.
“Your senses are heightened yet singularly focused on finishing the act and exiting quickly. In such a crowded room, once the director yells ‘cut’, my first instinct is to make a quick exit. I had to go find somewhere to hide.”
