ITV presenter Rageh Omaar breaks silence after falling ill live on air

Rageh Omaar has spoken out for the first time since becoming “unwell” on air.

On Friday (April 26) the 56-year-old journalist, who also holds the position of International Affairs Editor, began to battle with his speech as the night’s bulletin aired live to the nation.

Rageh’s apparent struggle sparked a wave of worry among those watching at home. Concerned, they posted the footage on social media platforms.

ITV later confirmed that Rageh had become “unwell while presenting and is now receiving medical care.” And now, Rageh has broken his silence on the matter.

In an statement shared by ITV he said: “I would like to thank everyone for their kindness and good wishes, especially all the medical staff, all my wonderful colleagues at ITV News, and our viewers who expressed concern.” He added: “At the time, I was determined to finish presenting the programme. I am grateful for all the support I’ve been given.”

Meanwhile ITV have also offered an update – revealing he is now recovering at his home. In the statement, they said: “We appreciate viewers of last night’s News at Ten were concerned about Rageh Omaar’s wellbeing.

“Following medical treatment at hospital, he is now recovering at home with his family. We are wishing Rageh a speedy recovery and look forward to him being back on screen when he feels ready.”

After watching the bulletin, one viewer posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Something DESPERATELY wrong with ITV newsreader, Rageh Omaar, reader of tonight’s Ten. Desperately hope he’s okay.”

Another added: “Sending well wishes to Rageh Omaar!” A third person said: “Best wishes to Rageh Omaar.” A fourth media user said: Sending @ragehomaar Get Well wishes.”

Rageh first gained recognition for his coverage of the Iraq war for the BBC in 2003. He now reports on significant global news stories for ITV News and also hosts the current affairs show, On Assignment.
