Amanda Holden’s forgotten role in Neighbours months before soap got cancelled revisited

Neighbours is known as one of the most beloved Australian soaps on the small screen.

But over the past few years, the long-running show has faced its fair share of difficulties. Loyal fans will remember how the show future was thrown into jeopardy after it was cancelled from broadcaster Channel 5 in 2022.

But that didn’t stop producers from fighting for its legacy, and soon landed a contract with Amazon Freevee. Thankfully, the streaming service stepped in to save the fan-favourite drama at the eleventh hour.

However, the soap from Down Under is a lot more than just a comforting daytime watch – it has launched the careers of some huge global stars. From pop sensations like Kylie Minogue to Hollywood stars like Margot Robbie and Liam Hemsworth, many soap stars have been catapulted to fame after starting their career on Ramsey Street.

What viewers may not know is that UK favourite Amanda Holden also landed a spot on the Aussie soap just months before it was cancelled. She may be widely known as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent, but she is also a talented actress.

And the blonde bombshell proved she still has what it takes to wow viewers after she made a guest appearance on the Channel 5 show in 2022. She played the role of Aunt Harriet in a surprising London-based storyline.

Harriet Robinson, played by Jemma Donovan, took the trip to the UK capital to visit her aunt in an attempt to try and solve a family mystery concerning her mother and Harriet’s late sister, Prue, played by Denise van Outen in the show back in 2019.

And it’s fair to say fans were baffled by Amanda’s unusual accent. As her episode hit the airwaves, viewers flooded to X – formerly known as Twitter – to share their confusion online.

One user penned: “Is that Amanda Holden in Neighbours with a strange accent #Neighbours.” Another agreed: “Why is it both Denise van Outen and Amanda Holden sound(ed) like they’re doing fake British accents on #neighbours despite both being British?”

But they weren’t the only Brits to make an appearance on the show, as hitmaker Sophie Ellis-Bexter took part in the gripping storyline. The brunette beauty was seen sitting on a bench by the Rover Thames when Harlow tries to take her notebook, mistaking it for her mother’s.

But this isn’t the only TV show she has taken part in over the years. Her first television appearance was as a contestant on the game show Blind Date in 1991. From 2006 to 2008 she portrayed Sarah Trevanian in three series of ITV ’s Wild At Heart. She also had smaller roles in Smack The Pony, EastEnders, Hearts And Bones, and Cutting It.
