Chilling Glee storyline which foreshadowed Mark Salling’s sick crimes

Eagle-eyed Glee fans might already have spotted the chilling episode which eerily foreshadowed Mark Salling’s future conviction and suicide.

Salling played Noah ‘Puck’ Puckerman in the teen drama from 2009 until 2015, appearing in a total of 96 episodes. And while watching any of his scenes is enough to give anyone the creeps looking back, there’s one in particular that appeared to allude to his disgusting inclinations.

In season two, episode 15, Puck and his girlfriend Lauren Zizes decide they want to make a sex tape together. Thankfully Miss Holliday, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, is able to talk them out of the bizarre move, pointing out that as both participants were under 18, it would be classed as child pornography to make or own the tape.

Afterwards, Puck makes the decision to join the celibacy club, and Lauren decides to join him. But even though that sex tape never happened, the mere mention of it is enough to raise the hackles of many a hardened Glee fan.

In real life, Salling was arrested in 2015 for possession of child pornography, later pleading guilty to downloading 25,000 images of children in sexual positions to his computer. He showed the images to his girlfriend at the time, who quickly reported it to the police.

In December 2017, Salling pleaded guilty to the crime and was allowed to remain out of prison while awaiting sentencing in March 2018. He faced four to seven years behind bars.

But in January 2018, Salling took his own life, hanging himself just weeks before he was due to be sentenced. Part of his bail conditions required the actor to wear an ankle monitor, which he managed to remove on the night of his suicide – it was found close to the family home, with Salling’s vehicle missing.

His autopsy found Salling was over the legal drink-drive limit, though no drugs were found in his system at the time of his death. The coroner’s report also discovered scars on his wrists from an earlier suicide attempt, with ligature marks found around his neck.

His attorney Michael Proctor said shortly before his death: “Mark is focused on accepting responsibility and attempting to atone for his conduct.” He was fired from miniseries Gods and Secrets in 2016, with a percentage of the profits from the show going to a charity for abused children.

Executive producer Adi Shankar said at the time: “He has been cut from the miniseries. I will personally be paying for the reshoots, and I hope that Mark finds inner peace.” He added: “Hopefully some good will come of all this.

“The innocence of our planet’s children is something that must be protected at all costs. As entertainers, our role is to be the ‘conscience of humanity.’”
