Richard Madeley gives update on ITV colleague Rageh Omaar after ‘medical emergency’

Richard Madeley brought Good Morning Britain to a standstill with an update on Rageh Omaar’s health scare after the newsman was struck by sudden illness live on air.

On Monday’s show (April 29), Richard interrupted the usual flow to address his ITV colleague’s condition, saying: “Now, time to talk about our good friend and colleague Rageh Omaar, who of course, has taken ill recently in the news.”

Susanna Reid chimed in with her well wishes: “Well we wish him all the very best!” Richard then reassured viewers: “I was going to say, other than to wish him the very best. Apparently he’s making a good recovery at home. He should be back on screens soon.”

The alarming moment occurred last Friday (April 26) when Rageh had trouble speaking while presenting the ITV News at Ten, prompting concern from viewers as he persevered through the bulletin.

ITV later confirmed that Rageh had been hospitalised but was now recuperating at home, surrounded by family. As messages of support poured in, Rageh expressed his gratitude in a statement circulated by ITV News.

He remarked: “I would like to thank everyone for their kindness and good wishes, especially all the medical staff, all my wonderful colleagues at ITV News, and our viewers who expressed concern,” reports the Express.

Rageh continued: “At the time, I was determined to finish presenting the programme. I am grateful for all the support I’ve been given.” A source told the Mail on Sunday that ITV clocked there was a problem with Rageh, they scrambled to find a replacement.

But as they sent in a back-up presenter to take the reins, Rageh was having none of it, the insider claimed. The mole dished: “No-one could get him out of his chair. He refused to move.”

“Even when he was told he had to go and that the team had called for medical help. Everyone did everything they could to help him. Rageh is a consummate professional.”

They continued, noting that the anchor was hell-bent on wrapping up the report he began.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV from 6am.
