Good Morning Britain turns awkward during tense clash as fans support Susanna Reid

Good Morning Britain viewers were full of praise for Susanna Reid for the way she handled a tense interview with George Galloway.

The pair clashed on Tuesday’s instalment of the ITV show (April 30) as Susanna and her co-host Richard Madeley interviewed the politician, who is MP for Rochdale, representing his own Workers Party of Britain. Susanna was quizzing George after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the Rochdale by-election was “beyond alarming” after George won a seat.

But he replied: “I am not here on trial.”

“You are here for an interview George Galloway, no-one is putting you on trial!” Susanna exclaimed. “This is a television studio and you represent a political party… you just complained about the question that I asked you, saying that you are on trial. It’s an interview.”

George was interviewed on GMB

George also came up against Richard when the presenter mentioned comments he made about Saddam Hussein decades ago. The politician noted that the comments were 25 years old and sniped: “You might have found some newer cuttings to throw at me.”

“Do you want to speak about 2024 and the upcoming general election?” he went on.

George also took aim at Richard, saying the TV star had asked him off camera about whether he was Muslim when he was actually Catholic. “That’s how good his press cuttings are,” he said. However, Richard explained that he was referring to the politician’s online profile, which he said mentioned his conversion to Islam. “I am a Roman Catholic in good standing,” insisted George, saying he didn’t know why there were stories about him converting.

GMB turned awkward as Susanna clashed with George

Viewers were gripped by the interview, branding it “lively” and “awkward” on social media. Some noted how well Susanna was handling it. “Fair play,” one said on X, adding that she managed it “like a pro”. Another chimed in: “Well done Susanna & Richard.”

Someone else said it was “great TV”, adding: “Really enjoying the verbal exchange with Susanna R and Richard M.” “The car crash interview of George Galloway by Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley shows that GMB is still ITV’s best comedy by a country mile…” quipped another.

Richard and George also locked horns on GMB

However, others were less impressed. “Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid gave George Galloway no chance what so ever to actually speak,” claimed one viewer. Another said: “Well having watched that interview George Galloway was always going to be difficult. Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid just helped him prove his point by refusing to discuss anything current. The interview was a complete shambles and they knew it.”
