EastEnders ’ Shona McGarty has confirmed her new acting gig since quitting the BBC soap after 16 years.
The actress, shot to fame as Whitney Dean on EastEnders – making her debut in 2008. And since then, she’s become a firm-favourite with viewers.
However, last year, it was confirmed that she had quit the soap – with her exit set to play out on a screen this month. However, it hasn’t taken Shona long to bag a new job.

On Tuesday (April 30) she took to her Instagram to share the news that she will be starring in the smash it theatre show, 2.22 A Ghost Story. Shona will be playing Jenny during its Dublin run.
Also in the cast is Love Island ’s Laura Whitmore, Strictly and The Wanted star Jay McGuiness and Colin O’Donoghue. Announcing the news, Shona told fans she was “so excited.”
Alongside a video of her, she penned in the caption: “I’m thrilled to announce I’ll be playing “Jennv” in @dannyrobinswithoneb @222aghoststory in Dublin! So excited! ” !!!! Get your tickets now!”. And as expected, her fans and former co-stars were quick to react.
Jacqueline Jossa who plays Lauren Branning penned: “I’m booking tickets! Me and Daniel are coming to watch you shine !!.” While Bianca Jackson actor Patsy Palmer gushed: “Yay!”
The show’s social media also announced the news on Instagram: “MEET YOUR DUBLIN CAST – Shona McGarty, Jay McGuiness, Colin O’Donoghue and Lara Whitmore will be taking 2:22: A Ghost Story to Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre this Summer, 21 June – 11 Aug. For a strictly limited run. Do you dare to join us?”
Shona confirmed her departure from the iconic show last July, having joined in 2008, but confessed it was not an easy decision. She further explained: “It was a really difficult decision, because it’s all I’ve ever known.
“I pretty much grew up on the Square, so I feel like I’m leaving home. But I had to put on my big girl pants and be quite brave, because life is so short, and you feel that more and more as you get older.”
Shona expressed her desire to explore other opportunities in the industry before reaching an age where she might be overlooked. Speaking to the Sun, she added that once “I’d made [the decision to leave], I was quite resolute that this was something I had to do.
“I mean, 16 years is amazing. I’ve had a really good run and Whitney needs a break.”
