Netflix is reportedly set to make a new live action series of Scooby-Doo.
Exact storylines and plot details, including the return of iconic characters and villains, have been kept under wraps for now and The Hollywood Reporter said “a deal has not yet formally closed,” while Variety shared that the project “will be based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon”.
Warner Bros. Television is gearing up to produce the series after a recent collaboration with the streaming platform Netflix for supernatural comedy-drama show Dead Boy Detectives. Variety also reported that Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg will work on the show’s script as writers while André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner will executive produce.

The live action series is not the first adaptation of the iconic show. Back in 2002, Scooby-Doo was released in cinemas featuring a now legendary ensemble cast including Linda Cardellini, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, Freddie Prinze JR., Rowan Atkinson, Isla Fisher and Pamela Anderson.
Scooby-Doo’s plot followed the Mystery Incorporated gang who reunite after two years apart to investigate the spooky goings on at a horror island resort. The film has become a cult classic over the years and even featured music from reggae artist Shaggy and rock group MxPx.
A ride based on the film was built at Warner Bros. Movie World in Queensland, Australia, where the movie was filmed. Following this was the second instalment, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed which featured a whole host of famous faces including Alicia Silverstone, Seth Green and Peter Boyle among others.
The sequel was released back in March 2004 but due to a lower grossing then the first film, a third instalment in the Scooby-Doo franchise was scrapped. The original animated series, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, was created in 1969 until it was later cancelled in 1986.
It followed the five main characters Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Shaggy Rogers and of course the gang’s Great Dane Scooby-Doo.
