The One Show hosts apologise as Bobby Brazier calls out awkward name blunder

Bobby Brazier wasn’t happy when he spotted a huge error at the start of his interview on The One Show.

The 20-year-old star, who reached the final of this year’s series of Strictly with pro partner Dianne Buswell, is returning to EastEnders as Freddie Slater. He appeared in the One Show studio on Wednesday (May 1) to chat about heading back to Walford.

However, he noticed that One Show host Alex Jones had gotten his character’s name wrong when introducing him. Instead of Freddie Slater, she called the resident “Freddie Mitchell”.

Bobby wasn’t having any of it and called out her error just seconds into his interview. Alex had said: “Now, in a moment we’ll be joined by Bobby Brazier as his character Freddie Mitchell gets ready to return to Albert Square, but first, let’s look at his story so far…”

Greeting him in the studio, Alex said: “Please welcome Bobby Brazier!”. But Bobby halted the show and said: “By the way, it’s Freddie Slater, not Freddie Mitchell. Freddie Mitchell don’t exist! Who is that?”

Alex and co-host Jermaine Jenas cringed at the blunder before apologising to the actor. The former footballer replying: “Oh wow, big error…” Alex admitted: “That is an error, isn’t it. A big apology, Bobby.”

Keen to move past the mistake, Jermaine said: “Let’s just push through then, shall we? Let’s crack on.”

Bobby, who left EastEnders last year, will be reprising his Freddie role alongside Albert Square icon Big Mo, his great-grandmother, played by Laila Morse. The last time we saw Freddie, he’d gone to spend some time with his mum Little Mo (Kacey Ainsworth) following his stint in jail after the attack on stalker Theo.

Big Mo left the Square in 2021 for a cruise with her fiancé Fat Elvis and has since returned to the soap for guest stints. Asked what Laila is like on set, Bobby admitted she was a “handful” but insisted he was too and that the pair bring out the best in one another.
