Strictly fans can buy pros’ knickers as show flogs underwear in secret sale

A Strictly Come Dancing star has shared how the costume department flogs off all the show’s old costumes – including the underwear.

The glitzy BBC One show has seen a slew of famous faces strut across the dance floor, dressed in the most jaw-dropping ensembles. From skimpy sequin frocks to bedazzled and bright suits, the wardrobe department pulls out all the stops year after year.

And it turns out that in preparation for a new series, the team sell off the old used costumes. According to Strictly pro Katya Jones, even the contestants’ underwear is sold off.

In an interview with Hello!, the dancer noted how the team reuse and recycle bits throughout the series. And once each series has wrapped, the team flogs off the old costumes in a “Strictly wardrobe sale.”

She said: “The Strictly wardrobe department are magicians No one would ever know that our Remembrance Day outfits were once a Halloween frock, or that a beautiful ballroom gown can be turned into a salsa dress within a matter of hours.

Katya went on: “Many of our costumes are also used for tours and even travel around the world for the versions of Strictly in other countries.”

She then added: “You can even find trousers and T-shirts with a ‘Nikita’ or ‘Giovanni’ name label on them… as well as shirts that still have underwear attached. Sometimes even Claudia Winkleman’s suits make an appearance.”

Previously host Claudia told the Mirror how the show tends to recycle her ensembles. She said: “I love the clothes I wear on Strictly but I don’t get to keep them. They go back to the BBC and I absolutely love it when I see other people wearing them.

Last year, host Claudia revealed she chooses a different theme for her dress style each year. Previously, she’s rocked up as the country as France and also Elvis Presley.

In 2022, Claudia styled her looks based on the Elvis biopic, directed by Baz Luhrmann. She also had a cardboard cutout of the pop icon in her dressing room.

And in 2023, she themed her entire wardrobe around a snooker player, following a viewer saying she was dressed like sport player Steve Davis. A source told The Mirror: ‘Claudia thought the quip was very funny and there are so many bright colours on a snooker table – including the green felt – that it seemed like the perfect opportunity to have some fun.”
