Benidorm actor Jake Canuso played womanising barman Mateo Catellanos in Benidorm, but these he’s worlds away from the ITV show.
While the programme, set in one of Spain’s rowdiest party scenes, boasted an impressive ensemble cast, very few actors can claim to have featured in every single episode. But Jake can.
That’s right. The Swiss-born performer starred in all 74 episodes, from the pilot in 2007 to the very last dance in 2018.

For over the decade, the beloved character made us laugh with his endless efforts to seduce the English women, while simultaneously pulling his nose up at our culture.

However, after 11 years of making cocktails, the ex-professional dancer is chasing pastures new, working on a plethora of new projects. In 2019, he starred as Tony Peroni in TV series ‘Scarborough’, and in television film ‘My Bad’ as Stewie.
And having said goodbye to sunny Benidorm, the actor has also bidded a fond farewell to his iconic slick-backed hair in favour of longer locks. But it’s safe to stay he still looks hunky.

In August 2022, he posted a black-and-white image of himself with his wet hair draped over his face, as if he’d just gone for a dip in the pool, albeit probably not the same one from the hotel he previously pretended to work at. He captioned the image: “#Justforthesakeofit.”

A year down the line, a philosophical Jake, posted a gym photo, with a self-reflective caption. He wrote: “I started to imagine my life like a new book with empty pages, waiting to be written. But, it takes courage to open that book, see the first page empty, take a pen in your hand and fearlessly let the pen write up the first few words. But, before you know it, the page fills up, and you turn to the next page, not knowing what you will find, but you know it is your book and your pen. It is your life, that you will write.”
Following his heart, Jake has pursued his love of the West End, performing in a plethora of high-quality plays, including Aladdin, where he wowed audiences at the Rhyl Pavilion with his breathtaking portrayal of Abanazar.
