Coronation Street fans brand storyline a ‘joke’ as Alya lands huge new job

Coronation Street fans reckon writers have made a bit of a mistake in a new storyline with Alya Nazir.

The character, played by Sair Khan, has landed a new high-flying job – her latest career move in a series of odd jobs. But viewers aren’t buying it, and have branded it a “joke”.

Early in her career, Alya was a trainee manager at knicker factory Underworld. She then became part-owner of her brother Zeedan’s restaurant, Speed Daal.

Then she worked at the Bistro, before becoming Dee-Dee’s legal secretary at Barlow Legal Services. More recently, she was approached by rival law firm Fabian’s.

Alya had taken a meeting in Adam Barlow’s place, and impressed Fabian’s boss Rich, who offered her a job. He then gave her the chance of a big project in Dublin, which she accepted too.

In reality, the storyline was introduced for actress Sair to head on maternity leave. But viewers have taken issue with it still, due to the speed of it.

One person posted online: “She was the office junior the other week but it’s ok she’s got a big book on contract law, so she’ll be qualified by the time she gets off the flight!” Another said: “Has Alya got a law degree or has she done a law conversion course? This storyline about her becoming a big time lawyer is a joke!”

Another said: “When Alya returns from Dublin will she be a barrister? No legal studies required.”

While someone else said: “Last year Alya was a Bistro waitress. Now pretending to be a top lawyer. Ridiculous writings.”

Alya left the soap this week, filming her final scenes before her baby arrived. Just hours after her final episode, Sair revealed she had given birth.

She shared a photo of her little boy and branded him “marvellous”. Sair added: “He’s super strong and so resilient for joining me on the absolute rollercoaster that was our 22 hours of labour.”

Corrie airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV1 and ITVX.
