Eurovision’s UK singer SuRie injured after man stormed stage and grabbed mic

Eurovision isn’t without its drama, and in 2018 the UK’s entry SuRie was left injured after a man invaded the stage during her performance.

The singer was entertaining the audience in Lisbon, Portugal with her track, Storm, when the man wearing a backpack rushed onto the stage and seized the mic from her. As baffled fans watched, the man then appeared to say: “Nazis of the UK media, we demand freedom.”

He was quickly removed from the stage and SuRie managed to finish her performance. But she later shared that the incident left her feeling a little sore.

“There’s a couple of bruises from where I was holding the mic,” she said. “But I’m OK.” “And my shoulder where he came in,” she added.

SuRie – whose real name is Susanna Marie Cork – said that the whole thing happened really fast and that “there wasn’t any time to feel fear”. ““That was a night of surprise it really was,” she said.

“He was suddenly there, security were on him as quick as he was on me, he got the mic for a few seconds, that was out of my hands, but the song was still going,” she said. “The backing vocalists were still singing, the crowd was still chanting.

“So I just turned upstage for a moment but I was still clapping and cheering with the crowd, I just didn’t have the mic. I turned back and saw the mic on the floor, and I thought, ‘Well that’s mine, I’ll finish this song’.”

SuRie, now 35, was offered the opportunity to perform again, but she said that she felt very proud of the performance that she had given so she decided not to do it again. She ended up finishing 24th out of 26 in that year’s competition.

Despite the disappointing result, said it had been great to do Eurovision. “It’s such an amazing thing to be part of,” she said.
