Horror fans have noticed a chilling trick used throughout The Shining.
The 1980 film is considered a horror classic and widely regarded as one of the most iconic films ever, with instantly recognisable scenes such as the blood flood, the twins holding hands and the legendary “Here’s Johnny” moment.
However, one subtle detail has the internet in uproar as fans of the Stephen King adaptation notice something very peculiar. Throughout The Shining, Jack Torrance – played by Jack Nicholson – often looks directly at the camera.

Whether his eyes are flitting from side to side or he takes an extended glance right down the camera lens, there are countless examples of this horrifying stunt that will send tingles down your spine. To make things even spookier, Jack is the only person in the whole film who does this.
The Shining is a ghost story through and through, so it is hinted that Jack is making eye contact with a spirit whenever he does this. It is also a clever method to draw the audience into the horror flick by making them part of the conversation as Jack acknowledges their presence.
His glances feel undeniably threatening as the story continues and Jack’s mental state begins to deteriorate. Over the years the internet has gathered to share a whole host of hidden easter eggs sprinkled throughout The Shining.
One includes Danny watching the cartoon Road Runner, which features a deadly chase and the theme tune stating “if he catches you you’re through”. Jack even calls himself the “big bad wolf” in later scenes when he chases down his wife Wendy, played by Shelley Duvall.
It has also been theorised that the Overlook Hotel changes shape when observant viewers attempted to make a floor plan based on the paths Jack takes. For example, when visiting Mr Ullman’s office Jack goes deep into the building, but there is somehow a window to the outside world.
When Wendy and Danny tour the freezer, they exit into a different hallway to the one they entered from. Producer Jan Harlan has previously admitted that the “huge ballroom would never actually fit inside” and that the “audience is deliberately made to not know where they’re going”.
