Gavin and Stacey finale predictions – wedding snub, fishing trip and murder twist

Gavin and Stacey fans are desperate to know what’s occurrin’ in the final ever episode.

Co-creators James Corden and Ruth Jones, who play Smithy and Nessa in the beloved BBC series, sent fans wild earlier this month when they announced the show is coming back for one last time at Christmas. The pair took to Instagram with a smiling selfie, which showed them holding up the finished script.

Since then, fans have been sharing all kinds of theories about what could unfold in the finale. We were left on a huge cliffhanger in 2019 when Nessa proposed to Smithy, leaving us wondering if he said yes.

And of course, everybody wants to know what happened on that cursed fishing trip between Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) and his nephew Jason (Robert Wilfort). Daily Star has rounded up some of the best theories from fans and AI about what we’ll see in the special.

Wedding snub

Will Nessa and Smithy end up getting married? Daily Star quizzed one of the world’s most ‘creative’ AI tools, Google Gemini, to see. It hinted at wedding bells.

It told us: “There’s a strong possibility that Nessa and Smithy could get married in the Gavin and Stacey finale. Many fans anticipate a happy ending for the couple and their potential wedding is a highly speculated outcome.”

However, a shocking twist could see Smithy ditch or reject Nessa, prompting her to make a very brave choice at the ceremony. “Nessa could walk down the aisle alone. This would be a strong statement of independence and self-reliance for Nessa’s character.”

And fans might see their son Neil the baby, who was seen to have grown up a fair bit, appear. The system suggested Neil will be carried down the aisle by another character, adding: “Perhaps Smithy, Gavin or another close family member could carry Neil down the aisle. Even if he doesn’t physically walk down the aisle, he could be incorporated symbolically and will be sure to wear a special outfit.”

Bryn hooked on OnlyFans

Fans on Reddit reckon Bryn could discover racy content on OnlyFans. A fan theorised: “Bryn. He’s definitely either been obsessed with TikTok or taken in by some influencer. We’ll still love him because of how wholesome and genuine he is. Crackin’ bloke”

Joining in with what Bryn would say in the situation, another said: “I found this cracking new website called Only…. Fans, you heard of it Mick?”

Bryn could blurt out the secret

A third added: “Bryn would have read about it and its first purpose, to give you a look into famous people’s lives, and would have been trying to persuade his TV icons to join.”

Predicting how he’d tell the family, they went on: “‘Now Mick, have you heard of, Only-Fans, a fantastic website where you get photos and updates from your favourite celebrities. I’ve been emailing Mary Berry after each episode of Bake Off, I hope she joins.’ Everyone looking at each other around the table smirking.”

Fishing trip reveal

Whatever happened on the fishing trip was “dark”

For years, fans have wondered just what went down on that infamous fishing trip between Bryn and Jason. They’ve kept their dark secret ever since the start of the show in 2007.

The pair, who can barely talk to one another, were about to tell the family what happened in the Christmas special before they were interrupted, so we still only have some details to go on. Bryn said it was “dark in every sense of the word” and only happened because it was “cold”.

Jason told his uncle that it is “perfectly legal” in Wales, and Dave from Dave’s Coaches – the only person who knows – said: “It’s a physical impossibility. It defies gravity.”

The pair can barely speak because of the incident

He also told Bryn, who told him the secret: “Seeing you standing there with a soup, it sets my mind racing, you know?” A script for an episode revealing what happened was written but never aired.

Google Gemini told Daily Star that one of the pair had a near-death experience which led to them sharing an awkward cuddle. “Perhaps Jason fell in the water and Bryn heroically rescued him. Getting warm might have led to an awkward situation where they cuddled for warmth, leading to later embarrassment.”

Another theory involves them taking a “detour”. “Maybe bad weather forced them to abandon their camping plans and seek refuge in a hotel. There, Bryn might have stumbled upon a naughty program on TV.”

Another fan on social media reckoned Bryn will be the one to reveal the secret, with some help from a few too many. They wrote: “My theory… Wedding happens… all happy and everything… final shot, Bryn gets wasted at the wedding reception and blurts out what happened whilst camping with Jason and it’s so hilarious that no one understands why it was kept secret.”

Murder twist

Fans reckon something sinister went down on the fishing trip

A more sinister, and perhaps less plausible theory, involves one of the pair accidentally killing someone.

In a Reddit thread, one Redditor mused: “So, hear me out: I think Bryn and Jason accidentally killed someone on their fishing trip. Christmas Special 2019, Bryn says it was ‘dark in every sense of the word’ Jason says they ‘knew nothing about camping’.”

“This makes me think that while setting up the tent, Bryn and Jason somehow accidentally killed someone, maybe with the hammer or tent poles, I’m not too sure on the specifics of how they did it.”

“When Dave speaks about it defying the laws of gravity, they could have hidden the body in a tree using the rope they’ll have had from the tent.”

Other fans agreed with the theory. One viewer even pointed out a ‘clue’ that could indicate Bryn and Jason ‘killed someone”. They wrote: “I like the theory, especially as the two families are named after serial killers!”

Fans will know that the families in and Gavin and Stacey are named after famous British serial killers. Stacey’s family, the Wests, are named after Fred and Rose West and Peter and Dawn Sutcliffe, the Shipman’s friends, are named after Peter Sutcliffe.

Returning star

It’s believed most of the original cast, such as Matthew Horne as Gavin and Joanna Page as Stacey, will be back for the send off. However, it remains to be seen whether or not other favourites like Dave will return.

Fans on the (above) Reddit thread want Dave to make an appearance given he had a sad ending. After all, his wedding to Nessa was called off and Nessa proposed to Smithy.

A Redditor wrote: “I would actually love to see a cameo from Dave Coaches because his ending was quite sad.” Another agreed: “Exactly. The only character to not have a happy ending was Dave and to be fair he deserved one. Stepped up as Neil’s ‘step dad’, kept the fishing trip story a secret for Bryn, and he never really did anything wrong.”
