Netflix backlash over fully erect penis scene as show branded ‘low grade p*rn’

Netflix has come under fire after viewers were confronted with scenes of a totally erect penis.

For the six part series A Man In Full, actor Tom Pelphrey drops a bedsheet to unveil his manhood after taking some viagra to help him along. According to reports, the show didn’t issue a graphic nudity warning at the start of the Tom Wolfe adaptation.

The internet has exploded with comments after Netflix viewers slammed the streaming platform for the over exposure. Spectator writer Mary Killen wrote: “I don’t want to see graphic sexual images when I’m watching a drama. There is too much already and it is reducing us to no better than barnyard animals.”

Radio 4’s Anne Atkins also added: “Where are the boundaries now, Netflix? A visibly erect penis is not only revolting to many normal viewers but artistically completely unnecessary: a glance down, a raised eyebrow would have done far more.”

Tory MP Alexander Stafford quipped: “If Netflix is serving up this sort of low-grade, pornographic rubbish, we need to give Ofcom full oversight of the streaming giant’s output as soon as possible.” Netflix’s European HQ is in Amsterdam meaning it is beyond Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code, which stated that scenes containing sex and nudity must only be shown between the watershed hours of 9pm and 5:30am.

Sara Britcliffe, another Tory MP, noted that “streaming services are available at any time of day,” so concerns about “watershed protection” are raised regarding the nude scene. Even Safe Schools Alliance shared their thoughts, with Tanya Carter stating: “Yet again we are questioning why the government is failing to act on this multi-fronted assault on childhood.”

A Man In Full was released on May 2 2024 and follows Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker as he attempts to defend his huge empire after a sudden bankruptcy. The series stars Jeff Daniels, Diane Lane, Tom Pelphrey, Ami Ameen and Lucy Liu among others.

The show is based on a 1998 novel of the same name, which was written by author Tom Wolfe. It is described as a “bitingly satirical novel” which follows the social classes in Georgia and those that interact with the main character Croker.
