Bake Off star shares ‘genius’ hack to clean oven racks while you sleep

Bake Off queen Nancy Birtwhistle has dropped a game-changing cleaning tip for blitzing through the nightmare of burnt-on grease on oven shelves and barbecue grills.

The green goddess, who’s been championing an eco-friendly lifestyle for nearly a decade, is all about those natural, non-toxic solutions when it comes to her cleaning regime. She’s big on washing soda for the dirty work, but this particular gem for sprucing up oven racks has got her followers absolutely gobsmacked.

Nancy took to her social media to share: “I’ve got my two oven shelves here. There is one, you can see, it’s fairly grotty. This is the other one, pretty much the same and I’m going to show you how we can clean them whilst we sleep.”

She dished out the dirt on her first method, saying, “For the first method, simply lay the oven shelf on the grass overnight. If you don’t have grass, the alternative is soaking it in the sink with three to four large scoops of washing soda and hot water.”

Nancy highlighted that this nifty, cost-free hack “only works on real grass,” so if you’re not blessed with a garden, you’ll need to stick to the sink soak. And for those on the hunt for washing soda or sodium carbonate, she flagged that it’s up for grabs on Amazon or your local supermarket shelves, reports the Express.

Right now, there’s a sweet deal on Amazon for Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda at £7.99, a cheeky drop from its usual £8.49. Or, if you’re feeling bulk-happy, eBay’s got a 5kg tub waiting for you at £15.64.

Another method she used was to soak the shelves in sink overnight but with a key ingredient

“Now if you’re thinking ‘I haven’t got a sink this big or big enough for my shelves’, I have followers that have used a wheelbarrow or a large plastic box big enough to hold the shelf. Once it’s submerged, leave it to soak overnight,” she continued.

The next day, Nancy popped out to her garden to check on “shelf no.1”, remarking: “So there’s my shelf, it’s been there all night, let’s see if it’s all cleaned up.”

She then effortlessly wiped away the stubborn grime from the rack with a clean kitchen towel. As she ran the towel along the metal bars, the burnt-on gunk lifted off with ease, and she repeated the action on the flip side.

Nancy highlighted the dangers of many oven cleaners, which are packed with nasty, toxic chemicals, and shared that she picked up the “amazing grass cleaning tip” from a mate ages ago. Proudly showing off the gleaming oven shelf to the camera, she beamed: “How good is that? ! Now for the one inside.”

Moving on to “shelf no.2”, she gave it a good wipe down with a fresh towel, and voila it was spotless. “Cleaning oven shelves doesn’t get any easier than this! “.

Her followers were gobsmacked by the grass trick, with one curious fan asking: “I do have to ask.. how the bleep did you discover that grass cleans your oven shelves? I’ve done it several times now with great success – barbecue grid too! But… HOW did you find this method? “.

Another cheekily added: “If I leave the whole oven outside on the grass overnight will it be clean by the morning? “.

“I can’t believe it! I’ve spent years using chemicals and scrubbing for hours! ” exclaimed one user.

However, another user claimed it “did nothing”, to which Nancy responded: “If the racks are very blackened they’ll need longer and long grass works well. Alternatively, use the washing soda soak and use the grass method every few weeks as a maintenance.”

“It works … I’ve been using the method for several years – all weathers, all temperatures.” she added.

For those seeking immediate results, they recommend Dr Magic Oven And Grill Cleaner or Pink Stuff cleaning paste to tackle stubborn stains and food residues on the racks.
