Sunday Brunch turns awkward as host asks very famous guest ‘what are you doing here’

Sir Keir Starmer caused a stir as he made his debut on Sunday Brunch.

The 61-year-old Leader of the Labour Party appeared on Channel 4 show on Sunday (May 19) and even showed off his cooking skills by bravely making tandoori salmon live on air.

Introducing the politician to the show, hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer told viewers watching at home it was Sir Keir’s first time on the show but couldn’t help but make a joke.

Tim asked: “What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be on the BBC with Laura Kuenssberg?.” Keir added that he thought Sunday Brunch would be “nicer” but the hosts warned him he would be “getting grilled”.

Sir Keir’s appearance on Sunday Brunch appeared to cause a stir online. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: “If politicians coming on #sundaybrunch think it makes them popular…..then they’ve obviously underestimated this audience.” Another added: “Disappointing to see Keir Starmer on The #SundayBrunch …. hes desperate… most viewers on dont do politics or vote…but i maybe wrong.”

A third person posted: “Kier Starmer on #Sundaybrunch ? Trying to be relevant and cool? I hate politicians.” A fourth social media user said: “Blimey, Kier Starmer doing #SundayBrunch.” Keir spoke to Tim and Simon after cooking up a storm in the kitchen and then he left the studio to go and support his beloved Arsenal.

It comes after host Simon warned guest Marvin Humes “watch out” during last week’s episode as he threatened the future of his show The Hit List. Simon and Tim joked that they were planning on taking their segment Eat Or Delete to primetime Saturday night TV, and that Marvin – who hosts The Hit List with wife Rochelle Humes on the BBC – should “watch out”.

Tim then added that with Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway now having finished on ITV, they would be replacing it. Simon said: “We’ve gone upmarket with the new name,” as a guest quipped: “Are we taking it to Saturday Night primetime?” Simon went on: “Yeah, shiny floor. Marv, watch out!

“Hit List is gonna go. It’s gonna be Eat Or Delete on a Saturday night from now on.” Tim teased: “They were looking for something to take over from [Saturday Night] Takeaway… This is it! This is exactly it.” Simon added: “And appropriate, being takeaway food.”

Sunday Brunch airs on Channel 4 at 9.30am weekly
