One actress who starred in a “messy” unsimulated sex scene insisted her role “wasn’t crazy” – despite not wanting her name to appear in the closing credits.
Margo Stilley played female lead Lisa in 2004 erotic drama Nine Songs, alongside Kieran O’Brien, who played Matt. The movie followed a series of “intense sexual encounters” between an American college student and an English scientist in London – in between a series of rock concerts.
The movie featured music from real artists, including Elbow, Franz Ferdinand, Primal Scream and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. But the real sex scenes were what really got people talking – although Margo insisted she didn’t do anything “crazy”.

She wanted to remain anonymous after shooting the racy flick, but her true identity was soon revealed, and she’s gone on to star in everything from TV series The Trip to How to Lose Friends and Alienate People alongside Gillian Anderson and Megan Fox.

At the time, Margo was only 21, and confessed: “I have managed to get myself into a mess.” She participated in scenes involving real oral sex and ejaculation, and left her religious mother praying for her daughter’s soul twice a day.
But Margo told The Guardian: “It isn’t shocking. If you know you are going to watch a film like this, it’s not abrasive. It’s normal sex that everyone has, not crazy stuff. I’m surprised [by the controversy], and even more by the fact that I’ve brought most of it on myself.”
She added to the Irish Examiner in 2008 that she was branded a “whore” and a “slut” at press conferences, fuming: “I didn’t invent sex! There’s a huge sex industry out there that’s worth billions. People ask me if I felt that [director] Michael Winterbottom took advantage of me because I hadn’t acted before, but they forget that I developed the character.”

She said: “I had sex with my boyfriend last night and that wasn’t porn. It was just hot sex! Nine Songs was a real film about love and sex, and I wanted to do that film and I am proud of it.”
Her co-star O’Brien, meanwhile, added: “People who say they find it offensive are liars. If they say they find it shocking, I don’t believe them.” He revealed in 2005: “It wasn’t difficult for me to make and I’m really proud of it.

“Honestly, I don’t know what all the fuss is about. It’s a film about two people in a monogamous relationship, having sex as you’d kind of hope that everyone does.” He added: “If you don’t want to be offended, don’t see it.”
The movie caused quite a stir at the time, with Ann Widdecombe comparing it to pornography, and slamming the BBFC for allowing it to be shown “in the mainstream”.
