Kate Garraway’s heartbreaking grief confession after financial woes and Derek’s death

Kate Garraway has opened up about grief amid her financial difficulties following the crippling costs of her late husband’s medical bills.

The GMB presenter was left heartbroken in January when husband Derek sadly passed away aged 56. The former political advisor suffered from serious health complications ever since contracting Covid-19 in 2020.

Since then, Kate has been open about life without Derek – who is also the father to her two children Darcey, 18 and Billy, 14. And on Tuesday (May 21) she appeared at the Prince’s Trust Awards.

Speaking to The Mirror, Kate shared how she has been “keeping busy” following Derek’s death and is focused on her two children.

Derek sadly passed away this year

“I’m only at the beginning of grief really. I’m just three months in so there are many ups and downs to come,” she shared. Kate went on to reveal how “at the moment” she has been “focusing on the youngsters, Billy and Darcy.”

She added: “And at the moment it’s all about keeping busy. I’m sure there will be a moment where I have to stop and deal with it. But at the moment I’m just keeping busy. Help is there. You just have to ask for it.

“And sometimes you have to ask for it time and time again. And hopefully, organisations like the Prince’s Trust which is particularly good at identifying people, will be there to scoop you up.”

It comes after Kate opened up about her personal finances following the huge costs of her late husband’s medical bills. Kate supported Derek in every step of his battle, which saw her accumulate £800,000 of debt owing to his round-the-clock care.

Earlier this year, Kate revealed the costs in providing care for her late husband left her unable to afford heating. During a documentary, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, Kate admitted she was in dire financial circumstances following Derek’s health issues. Kate shared how her ITV salary didn’t cover the huge bills from Derek’s medical care.

And earlier this month, Kate admitted how she’s had to resort to withdrawing money for her pension to pay for the bills. The TV star was on hosting duties for GMB when she spoke to a woman who had to dip into her pension to pay for a hip operation due to NHS waiting lists.

Kate revealed: “I’m doing something similar myself. I’ve just had to withdraw a bit you can tax-free for my pension to pay for belated bills for my husband who passed away.

“People are having to do the things – not that it was a huge pension in the first place – people are having to do things which aren’t what they saved for. And some people don’t have any savings at all,” she added.
