Sir Ranulph Fiennes cheated death while filming his new adventure series.
The legendary explorer jetted to Canada with his cousin Joseph to retrace a route he trekked along in 1971. And while they were filming, a gas leak caused a major explosion just yards away.
Producer Kate Beal Blyth said: “There was an explosion in the hotel next to where we were filming. It panicked me. Our medic actually went over to help the casualties.”

Ranulph and Joseph had to be guarded by security throughout the trip. They faced risks including wild animals and dangerous terrain. Joseph said: “Health and safety comes first so if you’re down a glacier or confronting a bear, there are people around you making sure you don’t get lost or eaten.”
Two-part series Fiennes: Return To The Wild starts on Sunday at 8pm on National Geographic. Despite the danger, the pair insist they loved their trip.
Ranulph said: “Completing this journey with Joseph and exploring the beautiful Canadian scenery has been more than just an adventure; it’s been a reunion of hearts and spirits. Together, we’ve rediscovered the strength of our bond and the power of shared experiences.
“Retracing the route of my 1971 adventure has been immensely fulfilling, made even more enjoyable by experiencing it with a family member.”
Joseph added: “Embarking on this adventure with Ran has been a profound journey of rediscovery and connection for me. It’s not just about conquering physical challenges; it’s about rekindling the bonds of family and embracing life’s unpredictable twists.”
