Pete Doherty says drug dealers ‘cross the road to avoid him’ and gun-toting uncles

Singer Pete Doherty has revealed how drug dealers ‘cross the road’ to avoid him these days – to avoid getting shot at by his protective ‘uncles’.

The Libertines rocker, 45, said that since moving to Etretat in Normandy, France, with wife Katia de Vidas, he has been clean. The couple, who had their first child – Billie-May – in May last year, moved to the small town of around 1,200 folk in 2019.

Speaking on Sunday (May 26), the Can’t Stand Me Now singer – who was previously hooked on heroin and crack cocaine – said that any drug dealers in Etretat stuck out like a sore thumb. He also said that his wife’s family live in the area, and that her uncles – often armed with hunting rifles – took any dealers by the ‘scruff of the neck’ and told them to scram.

Pete said: “Moving to rural Normandy probably saved my life. As well as being close to Katia’s family, it’s the kind of place where any dealer prowling around the streets is going to get noticed.”

He added: “Katia’s uncles would arrive on the double (and) sometimes they just happened to be carrying their hunting rifles and take the guy by the scruff of the neck. These days, if I see a dealer, they usually cross the road to avoid me.”

He went on to explain: “When I first moved to France I stayed in cities like Marseilles, Paris, Lille and Perpignan, but it was too easy for the dealers to find me. My wife, Katia, is French and we eventually found a little village on the Normandy coast just before the pandemic.

It comes after Pete confessed last year he appeared in court with drugs stuffed up his bum in case he got sent down. In 2007, the star came close to being jailed for possessing heroin “with intent to supply”. And he was fully prepared to go to prison.

Speaking to Louis Theroux in an interview, the troubled musician revealed: “When I walked into court I had some drugs stuffed up my a**e in case they sent me down.”

His life has been marked by numerous run-ins with the law. On one occasion, high on a cocktail of drugs and alcohol, he was arrested in Paris after attacking a man on a scooter. Taken back to a police station, he made matters a great deal worse by urinating on a copper’s desk.
