Celine Dion ‘almost’ died amid crippling stiff person syndrome health battle

Celine Dion has been battling a life-threatening condition known as stiff person syndrome, which nearly claimed her life.

The 56 year old singer is now doing “much better” but had a close call with death due to the disease, revealed Hoda Kotb while promoting an upcoming episode of Today With Hoda and Jenna. Kotb described it as “a scary time” for the music legend.

Earlier on Thursday, the trailer for Dion’s forthcoming Prime Video documentary titled I Am: Celine Dion was unveiled. The emotional preview features Dion discussing her devastating battle with stiff person syndrome.

Dion disclosed that she was diagnosed with the disorder almost two years ago: “She was diagnosed with a terrible disease, and at one point, she wondered if she was going to make it, whether she was going to live through it,” shared Kotb. “A lot of people are wondering what happened [and] what was wrong,” she added, reports the Express.

Kotb also mentioned that Dion spoke about how the disorder impacted her voice and hinted at a potential comeback. “We’ve missed her and it was a very emotional interview,” she reminisced. “We’ll see where she is on her journey of coming back, but I know people are cheering her on.”

Dion’s appearance on Today with Hoda and Jenna will be broadcast during the June 11 episode. Stiff person syndrome is a rare ailment that affects the nervous system, leading to painful spasms that intensify over time. There is currently no cure for the condition.

In the teaser for her forthcoming documentary, fans were given a sneak peek into the singer’s medical battles and emotional turmoil. She confessed to the camera: “I’ve been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder and I wasn’t ready to say anything before. But I’m ready now.”

“It’s not hard to do a show. It’s hard to cancel a show. I’m working hard every day but I have to admit, it’s been a struggle. I miss it so much, the people, I miss them,” she admitted, fighting back tears. The trailer also featured footage of her undergoing physical therapy, visiting doctors, recuperating with family, as well as nostalgic clips from her performances.

Towards the end of the trailer, Dion assured her fans that she will go to any lengths to preserve her voice, which she referred to as “the conductor of my life.” “When your voice brings you joy, you’re the best of yourself,” she expressed. “I need my instrument. I’ve been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder and I wasn’t ready to say anything before, but I’m ready now. I see my life and i love every piece of it.”

Discussing a potential comeback, she revealed: “I’m working hard every day, but I have to admit it’s a struggle. I miss it so much. The people… I miss them.” The trailer wrapped up with Dion declaring: “If I can’t run I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl. But I won’t stop, she won’t stop.”

The new documentary I Am: Celine Dion is set to premiere on Prime Video on June 25.
