Star of huge Netflix hit reveals why he quit acting to pursue new career

The star of a hit Netflix show has revealed why he decided to ditch Hollywood for a new career.

Dylan Minnette caught his biggest break in the hugely popular 2017 series 13 Reasons Why , in which he played Clay Jensen for four seasons. Two years after the show wrapped in 2020, the 27-year-old starred in another couple of productions.

He featured in thriller film Scream and the Amanda Seyfried-led miniseries The Dropout, which were both released in 2022 . But, despite his success, Minnette, who has been acting since he was eight, has decided to quit to pursue other goals.

There’s lots of quality news coming out of the US.

Speaking on the YouTube channel, Zach Sang Show, the US actor revealed why, despite his career peak in 2017, he had decided step back from Hollywood productions.

“I was fortunate to find success in [acting],” Minnette said.

“I was on 13 Reasons Why and it was really popular and definitely reached a peak in what I’ve had in acting. But it also started to feel like a bit of a job.

“And I was in a very fortunate position, it was always fun for me, always really inspiring, but then it was just starting to feel like just a job.”

He then shared that his main priority now is his alternative rock band Wallows. They started releasing music independently in 2017 and later signed a contract with Atlantic Records in 2018.

The actor started a band with his friends back in 2011. He sings and plays guitar, while Braeden Lemasters also sings and plays guitar, and Cole Preston handles guitar and drums.

“I feel like I’m in a position now where I can just kind of like do that [music] for a while and get this the farthest it can be,” he added.

“The only way that’s gonna happen is if I put my 100% time and energy into it and take it very seriously and show the world that we all take this very seriously.

“This is a real band, we’re going to do real band things.”

But Minnette hasn’t completely dismissed the idea of making a comeback on the screen in the future.

“I do feel like I have something to give, and that’s probably acting. … I feel like I’m starting to feel inspiration for that again,” he said.

“At some point, when we’ve fulfilled our Wallows duties and we’re all ready to take a break as a band, that’s when I’ll have the perfect inspiration to do something.”
