Horror fans threaten to storm out of cinema over iconic film reboot branded ‘worst in years’

A brand new remake of the iconic The Strangers movie has been released – but cinema-goers have warned others “not to waste their money.”

Back in 2008, horror lovers were left terrified after watching the original low-budget film. Starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, it followed a couple stopping at a remote holiday home.

Things take a harrowing turn when three masked strangers rock up – asking for Tamara. The trio then embarks on a murderous rampage – terrorising the couple.

The Strangers received rave reviews from critics in 2008 and was a box office smash, grossing $82 million from a $9 million budget. What’s more, in 2018, a sequel was released – The Strangers: Prey At Night.

The Strangers left horror film fans terrified in 2008

And this year the brand new remake, directed by Renny Harlin, was released to cinema screens. The new film follows the same premise as the original one.

Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez star as a smitten couple who take a wrong turn while travelling across the county. They end up at an AirBnB – and the three strangers quickly arrive.

The movie was a box office smash

The remake is part of an already-filmed trilogy. Speaking in May, director Renny Harlin estimated that the second film would be released in “September or October” and then wrap up in “the beginning of next year.”

The first film premiered over here in the UK, in May – and it didn’t take long for reviews to come flooding in. But it seems they are not too impressed.

The movie has been remade – and fans are not happy

Over on a Reddit thread, one person wrote: “I went in not even seeing the originals. Honestly, it was one of the worst movies l’ve ever seen in the past 10 years.”

Someone else added: “It was the first movie I’ve ever considered walking out of. The protagonists were the dumbest, most annoying characters I’ve ever seen in a movie.”

The remake has divided viewers

Over on X, a third angry fan penned: “The Strangers: Chapter 1 was complete trash, was legit ready to walk out. Shame because the first one was great.” Another fumed: “I watched The Strangers Chapter 1 and……. don’t waste ur money. It was the exact same thing as the first one.”

However other fans thought differently and actually enjoyed the slasher flick. On X, one viewer penned: “The Strangers: Chapter 1 was……. guess what? AMAZING! I loved this movie it was such a scary film with a lot of suspense and tension.”

Someone else added: “Just got out of The Strangers: Chapter 1. Way better than the original and actually liked the couple in this film over the original.”
