Karen couldn’t help but probe if he was playing the field, to which he spilled the beans: “Yes, I’m in a relationship.” Kaye had to jump in, chuckling about giving Shaun a heads-up on Karen’s nosy nature, while Karen confessed she’d done some digging on Shaun’s love life but came up empty-handed.
Then the converdsation took a turn to children, with Karen quizzing: “I wanted to ask if you ever had children? ” Shaun laid it out straight: “No, I have never had a child.” Reflecting on his decision not to have children, Shaun stated: “It was a conscious reason – when I was a young struggling barrister. I didn’t think it would be right to bring up a child when you’re trying to climb to the top of that greasy pole.
“And I’ve never regretted that decision. I’ve got 15 godchildren. Two of them are called Shaun and I’m the best godfather in the world. I probably would have been a great dad but I’ve got no regrets in relation to that.”
The closest thing to being a father for Shaun is raising the daughter of an ex-partner as his own. His life story includes a girl he essentially raised as a daughter: “I do have an ex-partner whose daughter, who I have raised since the age of two, she is my closest thing to a daughter but she lives in America now,” the Chaser further revealed.
“I watched her grow into a lovely young lady. She got a First Class Honours degree recently and she got her doctorate the other day and I was there.” The young woman considers Shaun as her father.
The Chase airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 5pm
