BBC Breakfast host Charlie Stayt ‘facing bankruptcy’ as he owes taxman thousands

BBC Breakfast star Charlie Stayt has been threatened with being declared bankrupt after failing to pay an outstanding tax bill.

Charlie, 61, together with his doting wife Anne, 58, have been asked to pay back the debt, which has already accumulated into the thousands. The pair were reportedly served individual petitions on Monday (June 3) requesting the money be paid back.

The source of the unpaid tax comes in the form of their TV and broadcasting firm Stayt Ltd. According to the latest figures, the company is believed to be some £6,409 in debt, with some of the unpaid tax stretching back to March 2023, reports The Sun.

Anne and Charlie have both been listed as directors for Stayt Limited, which has business aims stated as being television programming and broadcasting. But as well as Anne and Charlie, an accountant by the name as Hogbens Dunphy Secretaries has also been named as a director, which also deals in tax consultations.

Both Charlie and Anne have welcomed two children into the world, and the family continues to live in their luxury pad in Twickenham in South West London. Snapping up the house in 2002 for £800k, the property is now expected to be worth £2.3million.

Charlie is no stranger to high costs, having been sent to private school for his education back in the 1960s and 1970s. When he began his career in broadcasting, he first started out in radio, before eventually moving over to the TV game – first landing a job at rival channel ITV.

However, it is not just ITV and the BBC that Charlie has worked at, as he also led Channel 5’s coverage of the heart-breaking 9/11 terror attacks. He also has been able to work at Sky News, before moving to BBC Breakfast in 2006.

Initially joining the show during the weekend news coverage, Charlie has worked alongside the likes of Naga Munchetty and Susanna Reid, who left the show to join Good Morning Britain in 2014. Following former host Dan Walker’s departure back in April 2022, Charlie was able to take over the role the main weekday host of the show.

Since his stint on the show, Charlie has been the butt of many a joke as the public revelled in the hilarity. He has also been commended for his interviewing styles after he took on pop star Lady Gaga and questioned her support for Hillary Clinton in the American presidential election of 2016 against Donald Trump.
