EastEnders Ian Beale star’s three stone weight loss after ditching one thing

EastEnders’ Adam Woodyatt dropped an impressive three stone by ditching one thing from his diet.

The soap veteran, 55, has been a mainstay of the EastEnders cast for nearly 40 years playing Ian Beale. After making his first appearance back in 1985, the star has become a firm-favourite with fans.

Adam has appeared in more than 3,000 episodes and holds the title of longest-running cast member in the soap’s history. He’s also had his fair share of big storylines too.

Back in 2021 though, Adam took a brief hiatus from the soap. He also went on a major weight loss transformation – shedding an impressive three stone in weight.

He revealed his trick to shifting the pounds to The Mirror. He said: “Basically I gave up alcohol. That was the biggest change I made.

“With giving up alcohol, the weight drops off and because the weight dropped it was easier to cycle. So it was easier to stay fit. But at this point in my life, yeah, I’m quite happy not drinking. And the result is I’ve lost about three stone in weight.”

The soap star has previously opened up on his reasons for quitting drinking during an appearance on The Nightcap podcast. He said: “It was a health thing.

“I went into the hospital with a stomach issue and they pointed out my liver was probably taking a bit of a hammering. They said, ‘Look, give your liver a rest for six weeks, we’ll do some tests.’ Then Covid happened and six weeks became 12 weeks.

“And I thought, ‘Do you know what — I’ve cracked this, I don’t miss it, I’m better off without it’ and I thought, ‘That’s it!’

He added: “I’m not going to say never again, but at the moment no alcohol and it’s fine. But I still like smelling it, especially rum. I’m not so good on whisky.”

In 1985, aged 16 and working in his local butcher’s shop, Adam won his breakthrough role of Ian Beale. The character has had a slew of relationship dramas on the soap.

That includes six marriages to five women, Cindy Williams, Mel Healy, Laura Dunn, twice to Jane Collins and Sharon Watts, as well as two aborted engagements to Mandy Salter and Denise Fox.

“I was thinking that if EastEnders didn’t work out, then at least I could go back to cutting meat,” he recently revealed to Radio Times. Adam added: “I just wanted to earn money, which does sound very Ian Beale, doesn’t it?”
