Future of Dr Michael Mosley’s upcoming shows ‘sealed’ following tragic death

The future of Dr Michael Mosley’s programmes has been decided following his tragic death in Greece last week.

The much-loved television doctor had been holidaying on the Greek island of Symi when he went missing last Wednesday (June 5). An island-wide manhunt was launched, using local and national emergency services, before his body was found close to Agia Marina on the north of the island on Sunday (June 9).

A coroner ruled that Mosley’s death had been caused by heat exhaustion after he hiked through the island in nearly 40-degree heat. Dr Clare Bailey – Michael’s wife – paid tribute to him, adding that they were proud he “almost made it” to reaching for help.

As the family of the fallen doctor continue to grieve, questions are now being asked about Michael’s on-screen projects. This includes an unfinished series of a new show, titled Just One Thing, that he had been working on just weeks before he ventured to Symi.

Now, BBC bosses have decided to release the unfinished series of the TV show as a way of honouring Mosley’s legacy. The series, which is usually based on a similar show that airs weekly on BBC Radio 4, looks at how viewers and listeners can improve their general health using just one item.

Recent episodes of the radio show had seen Michael investigate the benefits of yoga on a person’s stress levels. Other topics he had explored recently also included how eating food at a slower pace can actually help to improve a person’s digestion.

Just three episodes of the current series had been aired on BBC Radio 4 when Michael went missing and sadly passed away. Similarly, the TV show was midway through production when Mosley tragically died, which left bosses unsure on what to do with his programmes.

But now, the BBC has said it will air what work was already done on the show as an homage to Michael and as a celebration of his work. Speaking to The Sun, a source close to the programme said: “This was Michael doing what he did best – trying to help people in an entertaining and engaging way that other experts might struggle to do.

“The BBC are now considering how usable the footage they have is and will of course consult with his family,” the insider added. “But at this stage it’s just too early to be having those conversations when they in a state of utter devastation.”

Just One Thing was announced to be a TV project back in April, and was said to closely follow the same structure of the radio show. Writing a message to listeners, Michael himself penned on Twitter following the announcement: “I’ve just begun filming a new series for BBC Two based on my popular podcast series Just One Thing – it is surprisingly challenging going from a radio format into a TV one, but so far it’s looking good…”

Another tribute to the television doctor will air on the BBC later this week. Michael Mosley – The Doctor Who Changed Britain is set to air on Friday (June 14) at 8pm on BBC One, and will look back over his 40-year career.
